I have no idea what their service is like, normally uncapped could be really slow as they oversell Business DSL service from Internet Solutions/

Possibly you could install a dedicated ADSL line at the WiSP and you route all
traffic thru that DSL line via the Wireless network, get an Afrihost account
and make sure no one else uses your DSL over Wireless bandwidth

Search Axess uncapped DSL option or Openweb

That should be viable for a wireless link.

Should work, especially if you use a signal boosting antenna from Poynting.

I think the technicalities are the easy bit. Structuring an arrangement with the neighbour is where the challenge lies, especially if they're on pre-paid.

The First Step.

Find out WHERE the main "box" is that your neighbours Telkom lines connect into.

IF this is not too far away and is not completley congested then I see NO reason WHY Telkom cannot just string another twisted pair for you.

You are going to have to do some of your own homework to ascertain how feasible it is to get a Telkom line to your premises.

Once you are pretty sure that there are NO major technical obstacles then bypass the local "idiots" and set up a meeting with your REGIONAL manager.

Tell him that unless Telkom come and install your line you will get a qualified cable installer to come and do the job yourself.

Oh -- looks to me like you are in the same area as "Captain WiFi":D

Best send him a PM

Looks like you are going to have to do quite a bit of "homework" on this one.

Decide on exactly what you want -- and then go out and make it happen.
( "wired" is generally better and the way to go -- especially for uncapped )

[EDIT]

Captain WiFi and "GrandMaster" all in ONE post WOOT :)

Sorry, didn't see the new posts. Still haven't switched to ADSL... still on my Vodacom 3G.

Update:
Telkom called today and said they are sending a technician over tomorrow, so realistically thinking there will be a technician at my house in 3 days. The delay is thanks to Telkom's 2 month vacation for the "festive season". So I'll just have to wait and see.

Hi Prof,

Usually if they phone you and say a technician will visit you the next day, expect him to be there.
They are pretty good in that respect.

Not far off the mark! The telkom techies have been forced to take leave now as virtually no vacation leave will be granted just before and during the SWC2010. There is also a traditional 'network freeze' from mid Dec to early Jan every year, can't remember exact reasons but they are valid - not something new!

And yes, scheduling appointments has improved over the years...

I used to know but forgot :o

I hate to break it to you, but it's 17:00 and there wasn't any technicians at my house.

It may have improved, but still not enough.

Telkom technician came over today, luckily it turned out that he is in the same church as our housekeeper, so he did his job. Telkom made more progress than ever this time, because they said they will come over tomorrow to dig for the twisted pair of lines our builder buried when they built my house a year ago. We've had Telkom technicians come over 3 times in the past year, only to tell us we won't be getting a telephone line, but they have never dug for a line before, so we're making progress. Hopefully I will finally get a telephone line. Next step: ADSL.

I called them today because they didn't show up today or yesterday, the person I talked to said that the appointment was scheduled for late February :wtf:, I asked her if she could move it closer and she said they can do it on Monday the eighteenth. :wtf:
