Hundreds of workers joined an unprotected strike on Friday morning at Takealot’s Montague Gardens warehouse.

Work came to a halt at the Montague Gardens, Cape Town, warehouse of online retailer Takealot when hundreds of workers embarked on an unprotected strike on Friday morning.

According to the workers pickers and packers are paid R34 per hour; shifts are 6 am to 6 pm, however, mostly they only end at 8pm; and they get one hour for lunch at 11 am.

Guess R34 / hour is not much.

The heavy issue in SA right now is that a lot of companies have frozen the possibility of salary increase while the cost of living continues to rise.

That is the reason for the unhappiness. It is happening across the board but only few have the opportunity to strike.

Basically this, and you see this in the agriculture industries all the time. Where temporary positions are demanded to be made permanent even though these employees are on the labour broker's books.

I would be in the view that Takealot scales as required. Amazon does this too.

That's long hours though. If they're just paying an hourly rate let people work how many hours they wish, as long as it's somewhat consistent.
