Takealot workers go on strike

People also need to take responsibility for their own education. They can't expect everything to just be handed to them and then complain when it isn't. A quick Google search on how to handle racism in the workplace gives you the information you need in the first 5 results, along with people you can contact to assist you.
Would you waste your money on data for a Google search if you earned 35 an hour?

This post is the perfect example of the internet.

Make up a story/believe everything they see on WhatsApp/Facebook, present it as fact, and rage about said “fact”

To be clear, I am all for worker/share schemes, profit sharing, etc, as long as it includes the potential downsides

Crazy, seeing it more and more. People sprouting crap all over the place

Even though the loss is suspect

Thirty five Rand an hour is way above minimum wage. Takealot are paying way above minimum wage to these ungrateful morons. They forget they have jobs where many like them with the same minimum qualifications have nothing.......

And what do they do? They strike.

Hiring labour is just not worth it anymore in ZA. I look forward to seeing how Amazon deals with this.

:whistling::D

FYI making a loss doesn’t mean they have no money left. The ‘making a loss’ can and probably is intentional because if you don’t make a profit…you don’t pay corporate income tax. You just invest all your pre tax income in warehouses or something and poof…no profit. You are obviously not declaring bankruptcy and are fully able to pay all salaries.

Let me illustrate:
Bank balance: R100,000
Revenue: R15,000
Investments: R30,000
——————
Profit: -R30,000
Bank Balance: R85,000

By no means are you facing any issues and the investment was intentional. You can declare a loss, pay no income tax and take that loss with you to the next period and offset any revenue then as well. The magic of tax optimisation.

So it’s unfair to share the fictitious downsides that management intentionally to not pay tax with the workers who have no say.

Making investments that increase assets (not liabilities) is not pre tax.
Otherwise what any business could do is just purchase properties and build a portfolio and say “hey look, I made a loss/no profit, so no tax paid to SARS”.

This is obviously an oversimplification, but there are distinct tax differences with opex vs capex

...sigh, stepping stones people...

a temp job of 34bux per hour, packing boxes or picking them for collection. why the hell would you want to do that permanently.

these twits hold up positions for younger people that need to move through these kind of jobs.

your first step is to get a job, any job, anything. this gives you work experience, any work experience will do. your attendance record and attitude will carry over to your next interview, maybe even some moments you showed initiative during a situation...

i guess there is a lack of understanding career stepping stones and how to use them.

i cleaned tables, or did door to door stuff etc. for peanuts when i first started out, but only to get to say, yes, when asked if i had any work experience at all.

So are warehouses once this lot decides on burning it down.
Let them then. Claim insurance. It is weak leadership that lets employees get away with illegally striking. They should be fired at the soonest legal opportunity. Subsequent violence and/or intimidation should be dealt with by SAPS or if not, private security.
We need to start taking a stand for this low-level worker ransom mindstate. Fire them, and if the unions want to take it further, see them in court.

Not in South Africa, he won't. Everyone knows this.
You realize that Amazon has been in the country for almost a decade now. The will fire you on a whim, I suggest you go and speak to their support staff to find out how bad it really is.

Not sure who the everyone is that you refer to, maybe more of your personal opinion on your side at best.

Who is this Everyone you refer to ?

Service is so shite, I'm sure no one has noticed yet

Takealot is proudly Naspers.
I think Rupert knows what he's doing by showing the R111mil loss.
They have plenty new gigantic warehouses, and why would they want to be taxed on a big profit.
Outsourcing is also beneficial.
Why can't it just be straight up, it's month there's no permanent position, take it or leave it. There shouldn't be false hope. Just set the expectation up front.
Naspers is also 49% Dutch, so half that money's going out anyway.

Naspers also own part of TenCent, yet their reported ecomm sales figures are so low.

This stuff is crazy
Johan Rupert does not own Naspers.
You are thinking of Koos Bekker

so they pay a picker/packer @ 34/hour.

yesterday i ordered a small item and i wanted to collect since its close and is in stock there, they wanted to charge me 30bux to collect it. wtf is this about?

thats a nice profit margin there, how much can a picker pick in an hour...

and to add to my stepping stone comment, people need to learn whats going on in the business they are in, learn from it. "steal with their eyes" if you can call it that, use it going forward.

They have been doing that for several years now.

If your purchase is less than R450, you have to pay extra for delivery or self-collection.

Where do you think the money comes from to pay the staff manning the collection points?

oh, i guess this is the first time ive ordered below the mark.

im not clued up on how they make all their money, or still run a loss for that matter...

without much thought, i guessed it came from sales etc. and charging the seller..

i wonder if those robot pickers work out cheaper for them than a person...
