TCL TVs

My dad is looking for a basic 65" inch Google TV for under R10k - any suggestions?

@squirrel is his TV/Living room extremely bright, all around windows as an example.

I think the C655 only has a peak brightness of 550nits

Edit: The pro with Local Dimming allows it to range from 450 typical to peak 600nits

In 2023 just before Christmas my Samsung TV (can't remember the model) packed up. This is also the TV that made me decide to never buy Samsung again. I bought it at Samsung in Canal Walk and was a schlep getting it to the car. Got home and set it up. Switched it on; nothing! Eventually phoned them only to be told those models do have power supply problems, just bring it back. Schelp again. Never again.

Any way so decided to try TCL.. I could not find stock of the model I wanted (even checked with Progenix whether they had stock coming in). After much moaning from the family I settled for the 55C645. Was a few days to deliver, only arrived early January 2024. Was very happy with quality vs price.

Now we fast forward to early December and the TV starts doing strange things. It has a setting for how it uses the power on/off function. Either it goes into a standby mode which makes startup a lot quicker or you can set it to power off completely. I've set it to standby mode. Now when I switch it off the screen does go off but the standby light does not come on so the TV does not switch on again. The backlight powered by the usb port also stays on. The only way get around this is to remove all power from the unit and when the power is restored the backlight come on briefly and then goes off and the standby light comes on again.

I bought this online from HiFi Corp so they were my first port of call (also online). The reply I got was to take the TV to my nearest branch. Not what I was hoping to hear. So I presented myself plus all paperwork to my nearest branch sans the TV. Where I was promptly told "no sir, you don't bring the TV in, TCL will send a technician to you." Well claim form filled out and signed etc. Had to take pictures of the TV and the serial number at the back (not that easy when mounted) and email them to the agent that helped me. This was on Saturday 28 December. Till today, crickets.

So from a service backup perspective I'm not sure TCL is the way to go. In the age we live in I find it surprising that we still have to fill out paper forms and there is no online process for this. I don't know whether TCL has received this or not. I've requested a reference number from the agent, but same crickets are singing.

Anyway, long story of my TCL experience so far. Certainly haven't put them on my "won't touch again" list, but certainly heading in that direction.

Rough
Sounds like you don’t have great luck with TV’s :D

Jokes aside
What firmware model is your TCL on? Just curious

Absolutely no idea. I did check it and it said "up to date", also auto update is on. My very old Samsung Plasma is still doing it's thing.

Maybe turn off the auto-update
I've been following a few UK/EU forums regarding updates, at times the TV's initial firmware version is the best, and the latest just fixes a few things and breaks a few others.

Might advise that you check which version it came out with, and compare it to what's on the TV currently, might be an update that screwed you over there.

Same as Samsung I'm afraid, once bitten twice shy. Admittedly was a long time ago CRT TV and VHS long ago, but also a cellphone somewhere in the mix. Me and LG? No, no.

& if the online request service page still has the error where it won't allow you to select language here is an email address direct to service
service.za#tcl.com replace the # with @

If menus are the same you tried system/power & energy/ & tried turning "energy saver" off.

Short press power i have no standby light showing either but it will power back on with a press of power or the home button.

For the life of me, I cant add my address in my profile, it doesn't give me a drop-down to select the language
Had the same problem. I remember now that when I bought the TV I also had that problem and tried a few times. Eventually just gave up.

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately that didn't work for me.
