TCP connections stalling / Gmail, Gtalk, WhatsApp issues [fix in place - testing]

****, you guys arent joking, I was having problems with my cellc 15minutes ago, it was 197.xxx.xxx.xxx, restarted my pc, connected now its 41.xxx.xxx.xxx and its working again!! WTF!!!
Is there any way to make it always connect to 41.xxx.xxx.xxx??

My MTN contract ends in about 2 month's time. I was considering porting to Cell C as they sometimes have really good deals, but if this issue doesn't get fixed soon, Cell C will most definitely lose one potential customer.

I'm also surprised that MyBB have not yet investigated this issue and published a good article on this. Talk about a good opportunity for journalism.

Follow up to my post of yesterday:

It looks like the "fix" that was put in place for this push notification delay problem, somehow has not been applied to the 197.x IP address range.

I was able to repeat the results of yesterday, where this delay problem is experienced on the 197.x range, but not on the 41.x range.

This is rather frustrating, as you cannot force your phone to only "get" an address from a particular IP range and you cannot be certain you will keep a 41.x address, as it may disconnect and reconnect in the background without your knowledge.

So, until this "fix" is applied across all Cell C IP address ranges, users will continue to experience this delay problem.

What is the apps you're using to test the problem.
Anything that requires a persistent connection for notifications; Gtalk, Gmail, WhatsApp, Viber, etc.
How do I check what my ip range my phone is connected to? Thanx
What kind of phone do you have?

Android users can try IP Address Widget.
Set it up as follows:
ip_address_widget_settings.jpg

Nokia N900 users can try Personal IP Address.
I compiled and packaged tcptraceroute for the N900, it is available in the extras-devel repository.

Cell-C are investigating the issue with 197.x addresses.

My push notifications have been working 100% since Saturday.

Sent from my GT-I9100 using MyBroadband Android App

Great, I'm on 197.xxx.xxx.xxx today, so no notifications for me (well 30 minutes later).
Try disconnecting / reconnecting until you get a 41.x address.

hmm strange....i think its not as widespread as we think as my cousin has a rbm hd for the last few months and he has no issues,i regularly chat to him over im etc.....even viber calls work perfect.

Probably isolated to a few people/areas.

I somehow doubt this. How has he been testing it? It could be that he is a much more heavy user of his phone...if you are constantly using WhatsApp for example then the connection will stay active and therefore you will not notice the delay's. If he is not actually looking at when the message was sent and when it was actually received on your phone then you might not notice the delay.

Not saying that is the case...but it certainly is a possibility.

Nope not a heavy user at all...doesn't even burn through his data for the month........although one of the guys that got it few weeks ago is a heavy user so there isnt anything related to usage as far as i know.

Oh and a delay would be noticeable if you chatting to someone in real time especially since you guys are talking half an hour delay......believe me there would be a huge stink about this if it wasn't a few isolated cases.

If you are actively chatting there is no delay. The problem condition would only appear after a 240 second break in the conversation.

Anyway, Cell-C have acknowledged the problem exists and have already put a fix in place which is working for anyone who gets a 41.x IP address. It is only when you get a 197.x address that you can still be affected.

Could it be certain areas are getting the certain IP addresses? I'm in Pretoria and since Saturday I have still received every push notification 100% on time.

Could possibly be area related.....but then again the dude works in jhb and lives in vereeniging so no issues between there...hmmm....so why dont they just change over to the 41.xxx IPs?(cell c i mean)

I am rocking out with a 41.x.x.x IP and things are still delayed. I am always getting a 41 IP here in durban.

If you are still experiencing the problem on the 41.x range, please post your full IP address.
