Telkom ADSL 'Self Install' now available

Are you guys saying that there is absolutely no installation charge for ADSL if you opt for the Self Install? Because if so, that is awesome. It would mean that Telkom are sending someone to "flip the switch" at the exchange for free, which is certainly a surprising move on their part.

This is a cop-out if you ask me.

All Telkom are doing is getting rid of yet more reliance on staff - they've retrenched thousands already.

You end up doing part of Telkoms job.

I say get a Telkom person to come out all the time anytime for anything - the more people we can get working in this country, the better.

All this move by Telkom does is to save THEM money.

They truly are demonic ...

bb_matt - your response to this was surprising. I can't see how this can be anything but a positive thing. Telkom are not MAKING you self-install, and frankly, they are offering you a cheaper (it seems even free) installation option. The knee-jerk critical reactions that plague many posts on this forum are detracting from our credibility as a community.

Huh,

I phoned them now and they told me that self install is only available in certain parts of JHB. I have an order waiting at the moment was really hoping to have an extra R400 so I could get the router with the wifi option.

Are they lying to me? anyone else asked besides JHB users?

It is only available in certain parts of jhb, and unless they specifically said your area is not available then they are just trying to get R400 from you.
Ask them if it is available in your area and then tell them you want the self install option.

Damn Robbers

I got to the telkom shop in benoni and they don't have the startup kit, then they told me my area is dsl activated but the self install option is not available there...bullsh*t......I have my own modem, filters and ISP...I just need their damn copper wire....now they told me I need software....for what...the modem got drivers....the isp got software...for what the hell else do you need software!!!!!....telkom is useless!!!! They just wasted my time and my petrol now.... But some manager will phone me now and I will ask him what the hell is in the so-called startup kit, and he must give me a bloody good reason why I will not be up and running 2night ...jeez....I thought the response was too quick for telkom....If I don't have a ADSL connection by tonight then I'll lay a complaint at ICASA...then there will be 47 complaints.

i have applied for adsl again today so if they finnally aproove us i will get my dad to get the self install option, i will tell every1 what happens, will take pics etc. Only noticed you guys are saying it only available in JHB, hopefully when i get approved it will be available for DBN

Well she was checking the area's for JHB and I said is it available in CT and she said no. The strage thing is I know they can do it in ct as we have two ADSL lines here at work and they never came to site for the second one, just got a phone call saying that the installation was done.

I've had an adsl order now for the past 3 weeks (ordered 3 weeks ago, checked a week ago and they had lost it so re-ordered). I called today to say I wanted to go the self-install route. We'll see what happens.

I'm in Cape Town btw. Lets see if anyone in Cape Town has success with self install.

How do you guys change ISP as I see the one guy here who requested recons he will be up and running by tonight.......over here in the UK if we swop ISP's we have to wait about 5-7 days.

Startup kit

Does anybody have any idea what's in this so-called "self Install startup kit"

Self start kit

can anybody tell me what is in this self start kit...cause the telkom shop that I went to did not receive it....I have my own ADSL modem and filters and can join an ISP at anytime....so what is in the kit that I need???

At the request of a fellow forumite, I have dredged up this thread & am temporarily applying digital glue to this ADSL Self-Installation related news article thread - perhaps forumites that went the self-installation ADSL route could share their experiences in this thread, and maybe this could form the basis of a follow-up MyADSL news article...

wtf? wasn't it free? nice vat mark up hehe, Telkom maths. Reason i bring up cost is this: In their presentation didn't they use the fact that self-install was faster & free? or did they just say cheaper for possible change?

WTH??? - Telkodemonopolies is now charging for ADSL Self-Installations? way to go Telkodemonopolies - why not just close your doors now bcos it's crap like this that will cause all your customers to migrate to SNOT as soon as they possibly can!!!

They charge you to do the install yourself? Nice one telkom.

Hey guys, myself and three of people that I know have done Self Install at ZERO cost - sort of the whole thing on what they promise.

Sort of defeat the previous accusations ...

This is a new charge apparently applicable to self installs done after 1 August 2006. No mention of this made by telkom when they announced the adsl decreases a month ago:mad:

I haven't heard anything about that. You're right in saying "apparently". I can't find it anywhere ... it's still free!
