Telkom and Netflix in talks: source

I'm not sure how Telkom is going to pull this off. I'm wondering about exclusive distribution rights for movies an shows that Multichoice already has, and the FPB wanting to classify everything made available. I hope it happens, I'm currently using Netflix US, but I'm not holding my breath.

first thought... oh goody... can get Netflix locally!
but then i think, how will it change my setup at home? not really... i currently run Netflix and Hulu via uncapped 1Mbps ADSL just fine, without Telkom.
I used to run through a US VPN which could at times be a bit slow in buffering, so would need to switch to the 4Mbps capped account.
but nowadays with the mediahint plugin into Chrome, don't even need the VPN anymore, so considering canceling that too.

Only benefit Telkom can give us, is if they have all the content locally, and we thus stream on a local connection, instead of from US .... but i doubt it will be free, and full content

I am on telkom uncapped and UnoTelly is working 100%. Watched stuff last night.

When I moved back to Telkom my service became erratic and then found this on the Unblock Us support pages:

Unfortunately some providers are using transparent proxy servers, which can break connection to our system OR forwarding all users DNS requests to their own servers aka "DNS hijacking" (see below).

“Black List” of providers with proxy servers:

Vodafone - New Zealand: You MUST have static IP to use our system with Vodafone. They don't forward users with static IP through their transparent proxy.
TelstraClear - New Zealand
SingTel - Singapore
StarHub Cable Vision - Singapore
Emirates Telecommunications Corporation – UAE
Telkom SA Limited – South Africa
Syban Systems Inc - Alberta (DNS hijacking)
Vodafone Italy (DNS hijacking)
True ISP - Thailand (selective transparent proxy)

Most likely you won't be able to connect to our system if your provider is using transparent proxy. DNS hijacking problem can be solved if you have router with DD-WRT firmware or can start local DNS server (most Mac's have one).

I did not try UnoTelly for the simple fact that they state this on their site:

If your ISP has transparent proxy to interfere with UnoDNS, then you can only access geo-restricted websites with our UnoVPN services:

It sounds brilliant. But then you look at SA and Telkom and get thi sinking feeling they will muck it up badly.
Either price it past Multichoice or have crappy content. Or both :wtf:

Telkom's recent history suggests they will get it right. And as far as MC's reaction is concerned, it will be anti-competitive and hopefully they get taken to task over it. MC knows that their empire is under threat - and that it will fall in the next few years.

Not sure why it is listed there but so many of us are using it fine.
I'm using the DNS. I've set it up as my main DNS in my router so all devices get it automatically. Gaming and stuff online works fine too.

I'll try out UnoTelly then once I'm in the mood for watching TV again, my experience was specifically with Unblock-Us, and seeing that line on UnoTelly's site just made me hesitant.

Don't care about that to be honest. Throw enough money at the tech and it'll work.

More concerned about the legal aspect. We could end up with a crippled portfolio full of "this video is not available in your region".

Thats also my worry.

If they allow the service and then its going to be heavily crippled.The upside is that its probably going to be zero rated data and we will be able to pull it at a much better speed.

Erm, we can already access Netflix though? Setting up UnoTelly takes 5 minutes and is $4 per month. Been using this for months for Netflix and works great.

FTW !!!! My biggest fear is that this will be like the google SA play store or Xbox live SA where you dont have the great access like the international ones. DSTV is so yesterday , I am so thankful for the advice I got here a few months ago and swopped my dstv for a 10mb uncap
