Telkom bashing

Glad the municipalities are at least doing something about it. Seems like the different levels of government are almost working against each other.

Maybe I'm wrong, but if I ran a company that suddenly lost R50mil+ a year I would have wondered why and started rethinking my strategy, sadly (or gladly, sooner they go bankrupt, the better) telkom just misses the point

If you think Telkom is bad with service, you should try deal with Joburg municipality. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD LUCK! They could offer broadband for free and I wouldnt sign up with them. Incompetence is an understatement.

New national sport... Telkom bashing championships!!! Who will be crowned king? :p
Heck, we could ask Telkom to help sponsor it! LOL

Roll it out

We need all the Wireless User Groups to join forces with the Municipalities and create a country wide mesh - we can have SAWUG (sorry Stellenbosch, we'll have to rename you!)

although if BPL kicks off - that could be the answer - come on GTS.

This broad band over powerlines will be interesting, hope it comes faster so we can all switch to it and telkom can screw themselves....

Telkom would do well to remember the classic David & Goliath story.... If BPL really works and they can offer me a triple play service @ R300,00 a month I'll take 2

:)

Just think about it: Tswane about R45m/year, Joburg about R50m/year, Knysna about R4m/year, ... if Durban, PE and Cape Town were to add to that, Telkom will lose close to R200m/year in revenue from these municipalities. If these municipalities could provide local internet access at (close to) cost, and possibly telephony (if not VOIP will suffice), for local businesses, then Telkom could lose around R2bn - R4bn in revenue. I think if I were a Telkom shareholder I would start making fire under the directors and management... heck, billions of profit would simply disappear.

But hoooorrraaay for the man int he street. He/she saves R2bn - R4bn. :D :D

LOL HA HA HA LOL Down with you Telkom down LOL LOL :D

Telkom are going to push up the prices now cause they are loosing money. Remember they need to make more profit this year than what they did last year.... :p

Strange .. I'm still paying the same amount for my services from my JHB municipality even thought they're saving sooo much money.

Oh look .. we've go a brand new thief !
COOLIOES !

Gotta love  goverment; one set of rules for themselves and another for the rest of us.

The only possible negative result of this is fewer customers to derive revenue for the telcos (Telkom, Sentech + Neotel). So unless the ECA is effectively applied, guess who will be paying for Telco's new infrastructure (you're wrong if you said local municipalities, as they can legally self provide).

If only this privilege had been provided to the rest of the business sector (ISPs included of course), would there even be a Telkom, Sentech or Neotel?

Yes, they can fill in the gaps where Telkom (edit:telscum) has failed to deliver, but you must also understand that telecoms service delivery is not their core competency.

Sure, but how long ago did telscum decide to retrench their competent workforce? telscum is even less qualified to run a voice/data network than my grandma.

telscum has been declining. The only reason they are still around is because of what was there the past 10 years, not what was added. Milk baby, MILK!!!

Says Du Plessis: "Estimated fiscal savings as a result of deploying our own backbone is roughly R3,5m/month, translating to R42m/year. The savings could even be higher, as the R42m figure accounts only for data services. We'll now spend around R2m/year on maintenance costs.

Eish...! You mean to tell me the beast is losing so much money (and more) from municipalities? I like it:D  :D

It costs to be a bastard!!!!

My concerns are that given JHB municipalities inability to sort out their electricity billing systems or even synchronise 2 robots, how will they be able to handle something as complex as this? or will they pull a sentech on us?
