Telkom broadband goes for Billion

Dangerous title there rpm, for a moment there I thought they skimming another price hike..would not be surprised though :)

and I see that the are the "exclusive" vendor..how Telkomish..

I'm finding it hard to feel positive about Billion products lately. My 7300M is still under the dreaded ARP and DNS cache poisoning attacks on SAIX.

I was told to use a software firewall, how brilliant, lol. I wonder if they give the same advice to their new "Telscum clients"?,

:D Very valid point...could have well been a product in Zim - discounted rate of a Billion Zim$ per GB...

The 800VGT is a powerfull monster, got mine yesterday and so far Smiles all the way.....

If you have a good software firewall, it will show you if attacks on your cache took place. I had the trial of Eset Smart Security, currently using OpenDNS ;)

You can clear your caches to be sure, just google for ARP Cache Clear and DNS Cache Clear, if you run XP and choose "repair" on the network connection, then it gets cleared automatically.

OpenDNS doesn't work with local accounts however, it's an international DNS server.
 
At least they are not distributing their own "wonderful wireless router" with it.... :D

The kit is a secondary issue, the price of the service is what drives the "digital home strategy".
 
Could some-one please enlighten me here? How would it be possible for a Router to stop DNS cache poisoning attacks?

As far as I understand a Routers main function would be to forward/Manage packets along different networks, not filter/translate the actual DNS to the specific Route cause of the DNS cache poisoning, this Job would be handed over to the o so wonderful Telkom.

Yep. Truth is, the cause isn't Billion's. The cause is Telscum that haven't patched their DNS servers.

But my logic tells me. If a free firewall such as ZoneAlarm can stop/block ARP/DNS attacks, why can't it be included in the firmware? Firmware is software at the end of the day as well.

The Router's firewall is used to filter the packets that are sent to a specific port, where as the software such as ZoneAlarm is an application that views the complete program/virus after it has been built up from the packets. So a virus is sent as say 500 packets and there is no way for the router to determine if there is a virus contained with in that packet.

They are actually completely different, the anti-virus works on layer 7 (application layer) of the OSI where as the router's firewall works on layer 3/4.

I'm not speaking about Viruses though. I'm speaking about the Firewall. I don't expect the router to stop virus attacks, the bright spark that starts developing those systems will make a killing. I'm speaking about Cache poising attacks (infected DNS servers) which you can't tell me is impossible to be filtered by a router. It just takes some work.
 
Dont know what all your problems are but got my 800VGT a few days ago. Works great and I think Telkom maybe will redeem themselfs with Billion Quality Routers. Billion Rocks!

well its better than Mecer routers or Marconi
I don't think Billion is bad , but that's only my opinion :cool:
