Telkom confirms wireless network plan

This may actually be a good thing - they may provide mobile data rates and mobile voice calls at lower rates than the cellular guys, sparking some sort of price war. I would certainly like to see more competition in the mobile space, especially when it comes to high speed mobile data.

Why can't they just invest in a fibre-to-home infrastructure? -.-' A little less-costly bandwidth... Is that too much to ask for :(

Let me guess: you'll still need a Telkom land-line so that they can bill you for your wireless service...

Are you dreaming ?

Are you dreaming ?
Maybe a little :D But any competition is good...I dont really care where it comes from. Just hope they come in with aggressive pricing and/or high usage limits. Speculation suggests that this may be the case.

That sound like a true possibility. I think Telkom would say " If you fall in a coverage area that supports voice or data on copper then we cant supply you with this service" or Like you say " You would need a landlines or adsl account with them so that you can qualify for such services."
Oh well all we can do is start praying.....

copper cable theft? I believe that Telkom got cursed and it is their reap what they sow to customers such as greed, selfish, high cost, cap bandwidth, give to goverments's cow's profit... They not want to learn from this lesson but still stubborn......... It is still same story anyway.

Well I think we all hope and dream about that day.
I mean every year we all get told that OH nice here is this new service from X provider and its going to bring down prices and then boom either it fails to launch or it launches with the same pricing models and then we all just back to square one. Then we all start dreaming again about the day that would change our lives.....hehe ;)

This is Telkom rpm. I would suggest that not only are you dreaming but your dream is similar to those male teenagers experience :p:D

I do find it humorous that once people set their sights on a company no matter what they do they will get reviled and ridiculed. News like this should be celebrated like rpm said above but instead we get the usual calls for the death of Telkom. What harm is there if they are launching a wireless network? If it sucks and is expensive we don't use it but at least it is more choice to the consumer. Guys get over yourselves...

I agree 100% with you.... I think we are all just tired of getting our hopes up....:(
We all thought that we would get value for money with every other launch we have seen in this country.... so what do you expect?
Then all we get told is that its a business so what do you expect...mmmm need I say more?

What bugs me is that if it sucks and is expensive, it's guaranteed to still have people that will use it :)

In rpm's defence :
WiMax is wireless and the price for the data is the same as for ADSL so I don't see why Telkom won't do the same for their WCDMA offering. This could kick Vodacom and MTN where is hurts because as far as I'm concerned they're profiteering when it comes to bandwidth charges.

Maybe Telkom will charge more for the rental portion but can you imagine the consternation at MTN and Vodacom if they release a WCMDA offering with R65 per GiB topups?
Plus if they allow the bandwidth to be purchased via other ISPs like they do with ADSL and WiMax that means one can use cheap local-only accounts too. That will be a big wakeup call for the cellular providers.

YEA well that's all if's. But it would be cool, I think we all would agree with that. <But lets not start dreaming now hey ;)>
Lets wait and see what will happen. Do we have any launching dates?
