Telkom confirms wireless network plan

Telkom’s relatively high prices for voice and data calls were inflating the day-to-day running costs for business clients, its chief of operations Motlatsi Nzeku admitted yesterday.

This is what $#$%^& me off. They know they charge to much and admit it but they do nothing about it!

To resolve those problems a new network will be rolled out using W CDMA (wideband code division multiple access), a cost-effective wireless technology that offers high speed data and video downloads as well as voice calls. One aim is to give small companies more affordable data packages for high-speed internet access.

Does Telkom even know what any of the above means?

To be honest, I don't care what Telkom rollout. If it is more expensive fewer people will take it up, if it is cheaper, hopefully it will force the competition to drop their prices.

I am not optimistic as we have heard this sort of speak before, but the reality is, if new products are not launched we will never know and will be stuck with the same old same old.

The sad reality is that we will only experience true competition and realistic prices when we have an open market free of bumbling, interfering ministers and an Independent Authority who is serious about liberalisation, competitiveness and low cost telecommunications.

Until that happens, everything is just a pipe dream.

Eish.... if only Telkom would do something properly.... maybe this one is it? :D

Maybe Telkom will charge more for the rental portion but can you imagine the consternation at MTN and Vodacom if they release a WCMDA offering with R65 per GiB topups?
Plus if they allow the bandwidth to be purchased via other ISPs like they do with ADSL and WiMax that means one can use cheap local-only accounts too. That will be a big wakeup call for the cellular providers.

Yes! Yes! And 10 000 times yes!

I believe LancelotSA has already signed up :D

I believe that the truth of the matter is that LancelotSA will not write off an idea before it even hits the market, no matter the name of the company.

In fact if you care to search through these forums for the thread aboyut Axxess prepaid and vouchers you will see that I quite happily shared my ADSL set up. And it involved Telkom. Not for the line rental, however, as I get this cheaper from elsewhere.

If Telkom provide me with the best solution in one area I will use them... if someone else provides a better solution, goodbye Telkom.

Most of us have heard these kind of announcements before...
they come and go...
then miss their self-imposed deadlines...
and eventually come out "just-under" the competition.

Personally I can't believe you still have hope.
after Sentech, after GTS, after Neotel, after Altech appeal....

My heart is dark for telecoms in S.A.

Wait jsut a second. Let me get this straight. They are going to build a wireless WCDMA network to combat their own artificially inflated pricing structures?

Oh i get it now. By building a wireless network, Telkom can offer the same services as a cellphone provider to their "fixed line" customers. Why buy a package from Vodacom or MTN when you can keep paying exhorbitant landline prices to Telkom?

This is not what we need from Telkom. While China mo**s ahead at 1Gbps data rates, we are stuck sucking at the dried up t*ts of Telkom.

This is just stupid. Telscum was in a position to offer true broadband to your home and pay per view media but what do they do?

They throw away their stake in Telscum Media and build a cr@ppy wireless network? Stupid bunch of idiots. They are so going to regret this months / years from now when other companies roll out fiber to their customers.

Maybe then telscum will jump on the new bandwagon called "fixed line". That is where the money is...

Stupid stupid stupid. Roll out a 100mb/s network to your clients and almost nobody will use "mobile" internet.

How many people here really need the mobility that the cell operators offer? 1%? 2%?

Now, how many here need reliable, high speed internet? 100%

Now, how many here need reliable, high speed internet? 100%

*cough* Well right now I'm paying about R1,000 a month for a 4meg line (including the accounts, of course) which gets a max of 2mbps and on a bad day 300kbps ;)

So... yeah, here, me! Woot, woot! I do!

This will make dead people turn in their coffin if TELKOM actually makes a difference to our country.

Another pipe dream that Telkom announced to make it seem like they are moving forward. Announcing this, and implementing it in real life, are two completely different things.

What a way to distract their shareholders from the real issues.

What is the problem with that?

The wonderful companies (i.e. Telkom) realise that they can get away with exorbitant prices and draining their clients dry without giving:
  • Good service
  • A high quality control
  • Improving their offers for the reasonable benefit of their clients instead of the unreasonable benefit of themselves

Business Economics - supply & demand. Where there are people financially (albeit not directly/actively) demanding high costs and bad service, it will be in ample supply. Telkom is proof of that.

Unfortunately Telkom's monopoly gives it control. It knows it's needed, so they will rent their services in as basic a means possible. Doing just enough to get away with it.

Personally, I find that unacceptable.

Their WCDMA network is the most expensive in the World

If they said they are allocating R1.7 billion for their network. They gonna have 200 plus BTS by march that would equal to R850 million for 100 BTS That equals to R8.5 million per BTS. Now certainly we gonna have BTS theft cos at R8.5 million per Tower these masts are gonna be made of pure GOLD. Current prices per tower rollout is R1.7 million per 3G tower. I will be sending a request to the NYSE where Telkom is listed. Someone within Telkom will be thieving alot of this R1.7 billion.

In rpm's defence :
.......... This could kick Vodacom and MTN where is hurts because as far as I'm concerned they're profiteering when it comes to bandwidth charges.........

PMSL profiteering is such a polite, diplomatic word. I prefer to think of it as rape.....

Bunch of negative nitwits. Nobody is forcing you to use telkom's products.

The w-cdma offering is targeted directly at Neotel's fixed/nomadic wireless product. Its targeted at customers that can't wait a few days/weeks for a DSL line to be installed, or for customers that live in an area where DSL is unavailable or where there is a high occurance of copper theft.

Surely Telkom would not build a wireless network costing a few Rbil if they are not confident that pricing would be competitive.

Competition / product choice has never hurt anyone, so stop complaining or change your service provider.

Interesting. My guess would be that Wimax was never rolled out as a product per se, but rather to augment access to the DoBroadband service using wimax as a "DSL replacement" access technology in areas where there is no DSL coverage. Therefore a limited deployment of base stations at strategic locations. I know of a few guys in the Kayelitsha area that is quite happy with their Wimax access.

The biggest problem with Wimax is probably Icasa. There is about 120MHz of available spectrum, and only a few licenses issued. You will probably need about 28MHz of spectrum to provide a decent service. That's why companies like WBS with a 14 MHZ license can only only provide a "DSL replacement" service... at DSL rates.

With W-CDMA on the other hand, you don't have all the spectrum issues as with Wimax. Also, manufactures have only recently begun to install Wimax chips into devices. W-CDMA however has been on the market for years, which makes things a little bit easier for consumers. In terms of the Wimax vs W-CDMA battle, it seems the W-CDMA might be a little ahead. I think Telkom will market W-CDMA as a standalone Voice/Data product that will compete directly with Neotel's offering. Time will tell.

PS. Telkom is not rolling out the network. It’s done as a turnkey solution by Huawei. There is a reason why the Chinese are where they are today....

I think there's more to an operational network than just a bunch of towers.
