Telkom customers pay more

alterantives? well apart from looking into satelite as an alternative to adsl there hasn't been any since 1996.

Neotel's behaviour doesnt really make sense. they know that there is a market that doesnt need to be convinced to ditch telkom, yet the one thing that market needs to move (if anyone from neotel is reading this, it's called an ethernet cable!), they dont provide that. methinx there is some fine print on neotel's licence conditions that says they can provide only dial-up, or something equally dumb like that. if not, how do u explain neotel's reluctance to provide what we r all waiting for?

Seems like my ADSL is staying the same still @ R549 512 3gb, even though it is a telkom line. They propably gonna increase line rental?

Yes, but a decrease in real money is the trend. It's the Rand that's in perpetual decline and so the nominal Rand price has to keep going up just to stay in the same place in dollar/Euro terms. Telkom pay international telcos and carriers in U$ and Euros, and today it takes more Rand than two months ago to pay the same $/E price. In Zimbabwe internet prices have to double every 4 days just to stay the same ... you get the idea.

Because by far the biggest cost portion is the cost of traffic on the international cable. This cost is decided by multi-lateral treaty and, again, it's paid in US$. Neotel can't offer substantially cheaper internet than Telkom because they have to use and pay for the same international links to the rest of the internet. That's by far the biggest cost component. That's why we have caps in SA ... because Telkom has contractual price tiers on the cable and is charged A LOT MORE per meg when they go over the contracted volume. Ditto for Neotel and anyone else on this end of the planet.

Also, I think Neotel has far more business sense than to seek the custom of power internet users and 'enthusiasts' - they're generally the biggest bandwidth hogs, have an insatiable appetite for downloads, completely disregard intellectual property, and ceaselessly complain. They're a losing business proposition for anyone, which is why telco's are slowly introducing caps all over the world.

Of course prices will drop dramatically when the new fibres come on stream starting next year.
 
Now come on everyone, be fair. Telkom has had a stunningly successful year as well we know from reports of CEO's rather excellent bonus. Obviously all the rest of the employees of said company will also be receiving their R15M bonuses for excellent performance, I mean the CEO can't have done this alone... So obviously we, the grateful consumer, must dig deep to reward these tireless providers of unparalleled service. Now where are my pills, the world is getting hazy again...;)
 
Rand was 7.30 to a Dollar today, the Dollar itself went up against the Euro, Yen, Canadian and Australian Dollars too. S
 
This is called taking advantage of a window of opportunity, seeing that Neotel is ot 100% ready as yet. Milk the cow whilst you can. Mooooo i say.
 
At risk of making everyone on here extremely irate while they all toi toi and gang up on Telkom... anyone have any idea what inflation is currently running at?

A little hint it is now well into double figures...
 
Inflation smation ....... they have never posted losses and could easily have dropped prices ... or even raised caps, speeds, etc as a gesture of good faith if it was proved that they really needed the increases.

Has the gesture of good faith of increasing speeds worked in the past?
 
Typical SA govt mentality: rich people use Telkom for broadband, so we can scr-w them
over a little more each time. Its the same with rates for your house, own a bigger house,
you have to pay a lot of money for the privilege of owning a big house (even though
you may have repaid it already). Typical.
 
I meant they have never suffered financially ..... so was an increase really that necessary? I doubt it ..... it's just greed as usual.

To be fair, you can't really fault Telkom, they're just trying to maximise profits. I don't think they're necessarily doing that very well but that's another argument.

The fault lies with the government, ICASA etc. who systematically sabotage competition and favour an inept, incompetent monopoly.

But now wait a minute... what do rates cover again?

So surely the guy in the mansion with 7 bathrooms as well as three guest loos should surely pay more!!

Some times people seem to battle to see things from a neutral unbiased perspectve...
