Telkom Does 3G with Do3G

Telkom’s network supports both HSDPA and HSUPA, but neither the Huawei E220 nor the Huawei E960 supports HSUPA which means that Telkom’s fixed-mobile data users will not enjoy the benefits of the higher upload speeds.

I just picked up a Telkom SIM with 1GB data.

No Contract
No landline required.
You can upgrade to a bigger cap anytime.
You can use your own 3g modem (I am using my MTN E270, just use an APN of "internet" without any username or password)
The process took about 10 mins at the Telkomdirect shop in Cresta.

I fall in a "good" coverage area and have been struggling to get any MTN or Vodacom HSDPA reception inside the house even though it works fine outside, so I was a bit skeptical whether Telkom reception would be better.

It definitely is! I get good HSDPA reception with more or less the following speeds:
Ping: 160
D/L: +- 2500kbps
U/L: +- 900kbps

I am very satisfied with Telkom's offering thus far.

Do you get a monthly bill, or is it pre-paid?

Unused data will expire at month end.

FFS! I hate this clasue. You pay for the data and if you don't use it you should be allowed to have it carry over. It is after all paid for.

As much as I despise iBurst, they are the only SP (to my knowledge) that allows data carry over (albeit for 1 month only).

I am also using a E270 modem (from MTN) but cannot get connected. Telkom say i must download there software to use their service but they only have the E220 & E960 drivers and software on there. i tried the E220 software but no go.

Any ideas ?

@Gifs, what is VPN ? where do i get it and how do i use it ? will it solve my connection problem ?

How much did you pay in total for the sim card and everything? I see their website says that you need to pay a R199 connection fee, is that only for contract?

I was hoping one could use your own modem. So we just swop the sim card then? When r they launching in CTN I wonder?

it works!

me quite chaffed right now :D
i went to local Telkom store to find out about the Do3G service.
I walked away with new sim without paying a cent, ... hell, when was the last time u got something for free?
The Do3G simcard and connection is currently FREE, till end Dec08.
I wanted to test first, but prepaid option is only from +-March next year (some ICASA license BS)... U've got 7 days to test, then either cancel or keep.
I have an MTN E220 so I just got the simcard. The R150 for 500megs and 30c oob rate interested me to try it. My Modem+MyChoice150 package contract ended so now, for less munny I can get more data (MC150=R190pm=R150airtime=75Mb)
Fired up speedtest.net for a few tests.... downloads between 2200 and 2500kbps!! Geez! faster than I ever went on VC or MTN.
I don't care about no roaming or mobility, this is just for here at home.
Upload normal 350-380kbps... guess coz the E220 not HSUPA.
Next I want to try with E270 or B960 modems, see what up & down speeds i get.
Of course, speed test is one thing... stability and reliability still remains to be seen.

I see telkom 3g is quite a good service... Speeds are stable and upload speeds are awesome, alot better than adsl... wonder why telkom cant make upload speed 1mb/s on adsl but can do it on 3g

I went to telkom wonderpark this morning and asked them about the 3g service and the sim card and the lady told me I HAVE to take the modem with the sim card and that I have to take a contract as well  I dont understand how others are getting the sim card free seperately  What should I do to get one?

the bits is just BS'ing u... or maybe she doesnt know better
I took along the Telkom newspaper advert that shows sim&connection is free till end dec, etc... but they were clued up at the Montana shop, knew about the free sim and the 7 day trial. They just went to the back, collected the sim and activated it.
U gotta fill in a contract form though... but if it doesnt work for you, just cancel.
How else are u supposed to test the service if they dont have prepaid yet, we all know how unreliable the coverage maps can be. (the can check on your street level, and tell u how many towers near ur street, good or ave signal)

Do you know the address for the montana shop or maybe explain to me where it is?
