Telkom explains slow ADSL speeds

it's amazing how telkom can lie through their teeth and people actually believe it. Telkom have had a major outage that has affected their international access since the 26th of december. yesterday new dorenfontein was down since around 10am... it is still not resolved although it was back up for a few hours. so how can they say that their where no outages that they where aware of?

I'm guessing so I could be wrong but from how I understand it they increased their overall bandwidth to their international peering partners. For that they would have to pay more and would therefore, obviously, prefer us to use up our bandwidth allocations on existing international or local traffic rather then spend more for extra capacity.

Any chance we can find out how much they charge Telkom for said peering? We can figure out a markup then. :D

"We suspect that the slow response is related to the sudden increase in demand for international bandwidth as customers attempt to utilize their monthly cap optimally"

Hold on a sec, I thought the average user only uses 2.5 Gigs a month, if that were the case then this wouldn't be happening. Yet, now when it suits Telkom they are saying that customers in general are trying to use as much of their cap as possible. Doesn't this fly in the face of their "2.5 Gig average use" statement.

Agreed. Servers must have been down for the last few weeks. Telkom is trying to get out of something like always.

Is there international link with Hong Kong sorted after the earth quake?

I still have putrid speed, it is over subscribed, bottom line.
This is certainly worse during working hours.
Love to know the actual contention ratio here, 20:1 my arse.

The Ratios during the day is bad. The max i get is like between 20kb/s and 60kb/s

Average Speeds After Hours 100kb/s to 200kb/s

This in on a 1mb line with 512k uncapped account.

Telkom is the worst company in South Africa at the moment, followed closely by Eskom. Oh yes don't forget ICASA followed by the goverment for not doing anything to change the industry. (I guess they are to busy counting their profits)

I just hope Neotel will be different, otherwise I would have to go wireless (If only wireless can bring their prices down)

“Telkom's investigations did not reveal any significant failures in our network that could explain the slow response experienced. We did however increase the international bandwidth temporarily to address the end of month peak, which is a normal monthly occurrence,” Telkom said.
Telkom creating scarcity where there is none, a scarce product is a more expensive product.

Techninal problems? But they would rather lie to us instead. I wonder why?

When will we be able to withhold payment until they fix their service?

Or not needing to pay for the days your ADSL line was down...

I agree with all the comments about Telkom. However, as an interim measure to improve the situation, would it not make sense for them to have each users cap start on the day they sign up? In that way, the load will be spread because the expiry of the cap will be spread throughout the month, preventing the need for the month-end crunch.

no its sabotage, they gonna have a state emergency ;)
and let the gov take hold of it FOR THE PEOPLE!!!. Incase we have a Tidal Wave!!

To what they said is just bull$&!t.

As for the slow hp speed , try mutli thread your downlaod that will speed it up.i u always get slow speed from them

Maybe they will have to start Rolling Blackouts till they get more bandwidth........?

why's it then now my adsl is still up to crap - are people now trying all trying to use up their cap before end the of Feb?

Something else.

I'm sorry - I don't believe the crap Telkom is telling about "end-of-the-month". As far as I can determine the local Verizon network is also slow (if somebody can confirm this, it would be great).

I suspect that they got a BIG problem on their physical network.

I think this whole thread is useless purely because everyone is trying to get answers to something that we all know in the end. Simply put Telkom is LYING and turning us into SUCKERS by making enourmous amounts of money for jam!!! Thats the answer right there :) forget the rest, we all know the truth but we still can't believe it because its hard to imagine being schnyed so much.
