Telkom hikes prices

Guys, seriously at the risk of p_ssing all of you off, if inflation is running at 11% and a company does not increase their prices it means you are 11% better off. I know we were all hoping for a price drop and yes, in due course I am sure it will come when the new cables are landed, but for now we need to see it for what it is. It is not what we want but it is not an inflation linked increase! Or even the inflation less 3.5% that they talk about on the ADSL segment. How can you honestly refuse to pay and petition government when a company reduces the cost of it's service by less than inflation? Did your company increase the cost of their product this year?

Yes, the one thing we can b_tch about is the need to pay the analogue line rental for ADSL. I obviously do and have never made a call... in fact I do not have a telephone attached to the line only my router! So I am p_ssing that against the wall every month. That could be a few gigs extra every month!

I also always hear talk of our salaries not going up by inflation but then what are you doing about that. Are you raising that issue with your bosses? You need to make noise for your next increase as that one should be at least 10%. A lot of people make the mistake of looking at their previous salary increase which could well have been 4 or 5%, which was what it should have been at the time, and b_tch about it not being 11%. Your bosses do not predict future inflation and raise your salary at that rate. They use the previous years inflation. Remember your salary reviews are usually annual and the inflation figure has only got out of control in the last few months...

They are already making enough profit as it is.
I really don't see a need.

Now they are just maximising

Don't feel pain or suffer but remember it is not for the first time but Telkom's greed for long time. Simple is... Don't subscribe to Telkom and go to Neotel and support Neotel. Telkom talks rubbish about inflation and Internet suppose descrese the price and save your petrol and you can use on Internet instead but Telkom wants you waste the petrol and will hit hurt oil soon.

Telkom really sick and Neotel is refresh.

Sound familiar? You can blame ICASA, the ANC, Africa, etc. as much as you want... nothing's going to change as long as people keep thinking up new ways of screwing each other over to boost their egos.

Just one more "Self destruct buttom" being pushed. Wonder how much of these buttons they have?

Good to see competition having the expected influence in pricing . . . .

Last month I cancelled my Telkom line and my ADSL line. Just can't afford it because of the high costs of everything else. I get a nice cellphone and free minutes and it is mobile for slightly more than just the line rental of a Telkom line...

Unfortunately I know that cancelling your Telkom line is not really an option for businesses and other home users. Where is Neotel? Where are they? Come on!

I understand your pain. This is not a bad option if you want to keep your line and it costs nothing to convert.

WTF? What is wrong with us being 11% better off. Why must we the consumers be screwed over. As for taking it up with bosses, do you really think bosses give a flying ****, as long as they can keep their budgets small and impress management higher up they do it. Many bosses are fighting not to give increases citing rising costs.

Its about time somebody did something, to stand up and say no - for people everywhere to open there windows and shout out I'M AS MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE

Food, fuel and retail prices have increased 20,30,40+%

Inflation is more than 11% and rising.

None of the Telkom price increases are above inflation. Therefore everything went DOWN in price in real terms. They are probably one of the few companies who have not increased prices above inflation. That is almost unheard of.

DSL and broadband costs stay the same, an effective 11% decrease in price in real terms.

Why are you all complaining when telecomms is the one thing that HAS NOT INCREASED in price for the next 12 months???? I can't understand your logic. Eskom just got 24.5% increase. You recognise the need to build new power stations and increase power supply. How is telecomms any different?

When you direct your hate at Telkom, realise that you are directing your hate at the wrong people. The SHAREHOLDERS control everything. They force the rest of that company to dance and make huge profits at any cost to the consumer.

Lastly, the reason you pay LINE RENTAL when you have DSL even if you don't want voice is because this covers the installation and maintenance of the copper. Telkom could easily NOT force you to have a phone line with DSL, but then you would be charged higher DSL rates if you opted out of the voice part. I agree it is not the most flexible way of charging customers. Bottom line is, you would pay for the copper with or without a phone number and voice service.

I am overall happy that my phone bill will not cost me any more in real terms the next 12 months. I am happy with my DSL service and i get all the internet i want for less than the price of a tank of fuel. That puts it into perspective for me.

Well they didn't need to increase their prices as they are 100000 times too expensive in the first place

Yup, precisely what I have been trying to say but you run the risk of getting lynched by coming across as defending Telkom on here! :)

And rightly so. :D

The issue IMO is that telecoms and internet specifically isn't a 'normal' product in that in free & competitive markets overseas the price has generally been dropping, either in absolute terms or in greater speed/cap for the same price which hasn't been happening in SA. In reality we need it to happen even more in SA due to the inflated Telkom prices that we've been paying so even though Telkom's increases are below inflation they're still massively overpriced.

Telkodemonopolies' tariffs are exorbitant to start with and the beast should be forced to reduce its pricing in line with international norms.

Also have a look at how much of consumer & business spending goes into Telkodemonopolies pocket every month - IMO Telkodemonopolies has artificially & deliberately pushed inflation up over a period of many years with its exorbitant pricing that affects everyone in SA.

For a country's economy to flourish, Telecoms pricing has to be affordable, it should not be comparable to paying off a mortgage every month, if only guavamint would use its 6 out 10 seats on Telkodemonopolies' board to radically reduce Telkodemonopolies' pricing...

BTW, if you believe I lynched you earlier in the other thread, you're mistaken - that was me in a good mood :p.

exactly, telkom's owners can create virtually any kind of market environment(since, hello? they own/run the country) so there is no excuse for them to Not lower the prices. Heck forget lowering it they can remove cost altogether on line rentals for starters, which hold no logic whatsoever.

I think the point that the optimists are missing is that the OVERALL increase is 2.4 % which DOES NOT APPLY to the majority of subscribers. They will have an increased rental as well as call costs EQUIVALENT TO INFLATION. So how are these people better off when there has not been nation-wide INFLATION BEATING SALARY INCREASES?
