Telkom integrated data wallet launched

Just read the text - "an enhancement to the Telkom Internet Softcap product which enables a subscriber to use SoftCap data on mobile, ADSL, VDSL, and FTTH connections."

So that looks like they just adding this feature to SoftCap, which is currently just a normal month to month ADSL account.
Yep, i do see the new button when i log into my month to month account

That's my thinking as well. It would essentially kill their "mobile data" business.

Economies of scales is great and everything, but there's a massive cost difference between 1GB of mobile data and 1GB of ADSL data.

The only mobile business they are going to kill is the competition. Telkom has shown many, many times in the past they really don't give a damn about cannibalizing their own.

As for pricing, well that is just greed on the mobile operators side. Just be glad that mobile pricing is finally dropping.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for Voda/MTN going down in flames.

I just can't see this new deal (the way its being presently currently) being feasible for Telkom.

Yes, mobile data costs are higher than they should be, but they're not as low as the cost of ADSL data (not even remotely I would think).

Hoping the final details of this offer are made clear sooner rather than later. If we're lucky, maybe it won't be too far off what this article is implying.

Back in the day Sainet had a package like this afaik with data (wallet) being shared between 3G usage and ADSL usage. Had the same option with international and local usage on their ADSL products. The ADSL:3G ratio was something like 1.5GB:250MB though.

Cannot wait to see this in action. For now I'm cautiously optimistic. Go Telkom.

I would hope that mobile data delivery is as cheap or cheaper than fixed delivery these days, will see if there is something I can google that might support that.

As it stands I'm not sure of the costs involved, but I'd much rather have a tower that I run a single fibre connection to that serves a lot of people than have to manage that same amount of people using old copper fixed lines. The tower just "feels" like a cheaper option.

I phoned 10210 about 6 times. Spone to new services both residential and business and Mobile but no one know what I'm talking about. I then asked them to log into the usage tracker and read it but they said they are not allowed to know my password and can't do that they can only check the usage via their own system which does not look the same.

As usual with Telkom the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing.

I think the new web functionality was accidentally activated before the products were officially launched!

Why should it be higher though? Other than being told that it is. There is no physical infrastructure required to get mobile data to a customer's premises...

Maybe because no one knows nothing.....
That would not be possible. The product would have been developed a while ago and plenty of other folks in the loop would know about it. Remember that the call centres no longer belong to Telkom. They will only know about this product after Telkom sends them the information and scripts.

This is just off the top of my head, got no real data to back it up.

Mobile 1GB:
This would be the cost of the actual data plus a cost for the connection (tower, etc)

ADSL 1GB:
This is the cost of the data only. The connection is a separate cost (ie phone line + ADSL "line")

Essentially, the mobile data is a final cost. Mobile networks don't charge to for access to their cell towers, while Telkom has 2 separate charges in order to get ADSL.

If you want 1GB from Telkom Mobile all you need to purchase is the 1GB of data.
If you want 1GB of ASDL, you need to get a Telkom phone line, get it ADSL activated then after that purchase data.

That's why I'd say that mobile data is more expensive than ADSL data, as it includes the "connection cost".

Mobile data is a last mile solution. Fundamentally, data once in a network's core/DC is data. It's how it gets to the end user or how an end user requests it and how it is managed by the network that dictates price, but primarily it's the last mile that costs the most.

In the case of mobile data, there is absolutely physical infrastructure in place to facilitate this, and it absolutely costs far more as a last mile solution (en-mass) than an existing fixed line last mile network. Especially on a national scale. The fact is that mobile data costs more than existing fixed line national last mile networks cost, especially on an operational basis, and especially in a scenario where spectrum isn't easily accessible and is in a state of artificial scarcity...

So mobile data for the price of fixed data, what catch am I missing?

The 1:1 is the promotional aspect. The final ratio will be determined during the promotion, but 1:2 or 1:3 may be achieveable.

Uncapped users are excluded?

No, tsume guessed it:

Seems so, but it makes sense unless they come up with a mobile softcap for uncapped users.

(My personal TI account is a 4Mbps uncapped account, and I have the mobile service working on this account).

This will be really good, I might even port my number to Telkom.

At present, due to limitations on the Mobile side, you can't have voice on the SIM used for the Telkom Internet mobile data.

It works well as a data sim on a tablet, failover on an ADSL modem, or on a dual-sim smart phone.

The prices were last adjusted almost a year ago, and will be adjusted soon (I think within less than a month).

Please tell us how to get it because 10210 is clueless and the website is not very informative too.

did anyone manage to sign up?

Contrary to the article, it hasn't launched. The info on the tracker is a teaser ...

Does it include unlimited data (night Surfer)?

At present, yes (for softcap people, for ADSL uncapped accounts, there is a limit on mobile night surfer)

Errr...does that mean I can downgrade to 1mbps ADSL and then use the data on mobile which could theoretically run 20x faster???

For a few months, yes.

So how many mobile Sims can be connected to an adsl account?

Going to be a while before we get clarity, just tried 10210 and the lady didn't have an idea

There has been some training to the call centre in the past, but this specific promotion has not yet reached the call centre, as it hasn't launched yet.

WOOT unlimited night surfer. Please tell me it will stay like that or atleast be something good. Ohh and when is the launch of this super awesome game changer?

Was not expecting that. :)

Too much guessing here. The article was a bit premature IMO. Details needed before we can comment properly...

I just don't see how they would be able to offer "byte for byte". It would cannabilise their LTE / Telkom Mobile data bundles and offerings...

We're tired of Telkom Mobile trying to under-cut ADSL :-).

The thing is why even mention the byte ratio if it's 1 to 1. My guess is it'll be a different number once things are cleared up.

You will notice that this is a promotion. The promotional part is the 1:1. The final ratio hasn't been decided, but values of e.g. 1:3 may be feasible. We want to have it at such a point that:
- We don't lose too much money on it
- We don't motivate people to ditch ADSL, but rather be a complementary service
- Provide more value than competitors (both ADSL and Mobile)
- Give customers a better solution with fewer headaches/worries about going out-of-bundle, having data they can't use when on holiday etc.
