Telkom Internet APN changes implemented

Telkom has implemented a change to its Internet APN which will provide mobile customers with a more secure mobile Internet connection.

Many Telkom mobile subscribers have noticed that their IP addresses change regularly, and that they do not receive public IP addresses like they did before.

Hat tip to Morkhans, sajunky, rico123, and Maik for the story.
 
So nice of Telkom to proactively communicate these changes before they happen. :rolleyes:

Yes, there is most likely some issue with their gateway that keeps cycling IPs, that causes that problem. They haven't tested this very well.

NAT is not security. That fib is getting old now.

Additionally - a CG-NAT that is unable to either statefully or statelessly maintain IP to user mapping for a reasonable period of time is broken.

Yup. Although there is something to be said for blocking unsolicited inbound connections. Won't stop your infected machines from calling home, but you get to dodge port scans and other probes. In the early days of super expensive mobile data and small caps certain and relentless probes could take a bite out of your bundle.

What a clusterf^ck. Home Telkom LTE could connect to work Telkom LTE for CCTV and RDP no problem. Try and connect to CCTV from my MTN sim in my handset and no go.

Can someone explain WTF they would implement this?

I changed both home and work sites to unrestricted and EVERYTHING works again. on the internet APN, I could not even browse to rarbg!!
 
Anything to create a new revenue stream at the expense of your customers.

Some person decided they needed to be proactive about something...

Telkom unfortunately have a habit of making changes like this without fully testing them in my opinion.....

Got this last night too, trying to access MyBroadband.co.za...

So the Unrestricted APN you simply cannot just enter into the router, you need to apply for it?

I just changed the APN in 2x LTE UNCAPPED routers and life is good again. No calling Telkom

Thank you, what is the name of that unrestricted APN then... I have been using the "internet" APN to date. I presume username and password are blank too
 
How Do you you change the apn, been holding for an hour and when you get through they dont know what you talking about and put you on hold again.Cant play online with PS PLus
