Yes, get a capped account as a backup.

I think streaming is the most common cause for anyone to get an uncapped account in the first place. Capped bandwidth is expensive, though the performance is great, so getting an additional capped account would be acceptable for something like email or simple browing (images and such), not as a backup for mass-data application -- the backup would be more expensive than your uncapped account...

The only way right now seems to be switching ISP, however Telkom should have this fixed soon, I hope. Would be frighteningly pleasant if there were a notification system for displaying faults and estimated system errors or fixes.

I am curious to find out where the faults are occurring. The IPC in Cape Town was upgraded a few months ago again, wasn't it?

EDIT: Post-11PM and it's flying again! What a surprise...
EDIT2: Ok that seems like it didn't last very long.

Where are you from, and what DNS settings are you using? Also, what account are you on?

Cape Town, 2mbps Uncapped.

196.43.46.190 preferred for Cape Town
196.43.42.190 alternate for Cape Town

I'm not debating the cost of capped accounts but it's a viable alternative if you need an account that streams perfectly.
10Gb for R50 from Afrihost is hardly breaking the bank and it makes it much easier to stream when Telkom is up to it's usual ****.

I have both a 4Mb uncapped from Telkom and a 20+20 from Afrihost.

Or connection.co.za 20GB @ R49.

I suspect they are using that time spot to try and implement a fix as it was the same the night before. I wish them and us luck with the repair .............

Mine is back up today as well.

On a positive note, I reported the fault through the Telkom app on my iPad last night, and had the telkom technician here just after 1pm.

Telkom 4mb package. Able to sync at 26mb as per the modem. Attenuation and SnR margins excellent. Used 2gb so far for the month and can't stream even at 480p on Youtube.

I used 70gb last month and all protocols (except gaming) was still useless. Actually suprised I used so much.

Torrents are dead. NNTP is dead. The only thing working on the Telkom account is gaming.

Speedtest indicating 3.11mbps download speed compared to the 3.6 mbps I'm getting on my 2mb Connection account.

Just thinking of cancelling the 4mb data package and using the Connection account for the time being.

This is what I've found over the past few days.
Telkom 4MB Uncapped

- YouTube streams perfectly.
- Downloading from the Microsoft US site gives me full line speed, averaging a constant 428kbps
- Downloading a 240mb file from the Nvidia site - Constant speed of between 420-430kbps
- Google Play store download - 620mb file downloaded at around 400kbps.
- Downloading from Rapidgator and Uploaded Premium accounts - Erratic speeds, between 5-200kbps. Averaging 40-60kbps.
- Downloading from Dropbox - Under 100kbps.
- Downloading from WeTransfer - Under 100kbps.

This is all within the same time frame.

I've tried RG, UL, Dropbox and WeTransfer at various parts of the day and night, and get the same speeds, sometimes worse.
Can't comment on torrents though, as I don't use them.

Whoever is in charge of "fixing" things at Telkom has done a piss poor job of it.
The only thing they need to do is unf#@k what they have royally f#ck3d up. It was a great service up until a couple of months ago.

Saying "we've implemented this or that fix" is complete bs. They are going from bad to worse, and while the unofficial rep on this thread seems to have no problem telling people to leave, I think his efforts would be better spent sorting out whatever mess they've created. It's time they take responsibility for the service we pay for.

First time in days I'm getting full download speeds during the day.

Hopefully this lasts. :)
