I wonder what are the usage limits on the TI Business accounts. It seems the usage tracker goes orange at 250GB on a 4mbps package.

Have you checked TiTracker? If its red you might be throttled. I have done close on 400GB in the past and not been throttled.
Is that 40KB/s across all protocols?

Done nearly 400gigs for the month so far, and my bar is still in the orange and my speeds are still perfect on my 4meg line. Was streaming this weekend with no issues. Gaming was perfect as well.

its red.
After being very happy with telkom and even recommanded them to a few colleagues, it's time to look for a new ISP again.

Any recommandations?
i know afrihost is very populer, however, i believe they use something called a "rolling window"?
i believe uncapped should just be uncapped without complicating things.

Webafrica uses the rolling window.
Afrihost just shapes regular uncapped like crazy - see the open thread. P2P is affected badly.
Their business product is 'managed' so they can call it unshaped even though it seems like it is shaped.

I been around the mill when it comes to ISP's and honestly Ti has been the best for me.
I'm not a heavy downloader so their throttling policy hasn't affected me not even once in all the time I been with them.

I cant honestly recommend another ISP as I found issues with all. Most other ISP's shape the hell out of your day time connection making realtime services like streaming even 360p on a 4MB line impossible.

If Ti works well why not rather change your download habits and queue up your bulk downloads between 12am and 7am when they count less towards your usage. This trend is also used by the guys using IS account, like Web Africa and Plugg.
Personally I only start to do that when my account is in the orange and I wanna avoid the red zone.

Whatever you choose to do, dont go with Open Web. Read their thread and you will know why.

Let me translate the above:

We here at Telkom have a dinky toy network. We don't have good infrastructure to handle large downloaders. We simply don’t have enough for everybody. With our “don’t give a crap attitude” we simply get rid of those who use a lot. This way we don’t have to upgrade our capacity and infrastructure and we can happily keep on milking our fat-cash-cow-customers. (They are all ridiculously rich anyway.)

To tell you the truth, we mostly don’t upgrade anything and innovation is some foreign concept that we don’t understand or comprehend. That is actually why we only have 5 VDSL customers. Luckily the public are like dumb sheep and will never know this. It’s actually a relief that we have at least 5 VDSL customers because now we can promote ourselves offering this new unbelievable technology called VDSL. Aint we just great ey ? Actually our network will probably fall over if we have more than 5 VDSL customers because our dinky toy network will never be able to handle more than 5 VDSL customers but the public is too dumb to put two and two together. HA HA HA HA…. HAHAHAHA.. BWAHAHAHAHA….

We simply LOOOOVE pocketing your hard earned cash. The statistics and complicated graphs that they have in printed media and other media outlets are simply a lies. We hate these statistics because all fingers are pointing to us being mostly responsible for the most expensive Internet in the world here in SA. ALL BLATANT LIES I tell you!!! That is why we here at Telkom believe that the earth is actually flat instead of round.
You can't afford the type of account you're looking for. Add a few thousand to what you are paying now.

Don't worry I'm a cheapskate too. :D

I don't understand how you guys download so much. I download all the documentaries and shows I want, constantly stream things, use steam, and still hardly ever exceed 100gb a month. That being said, South African ISP's should stop using the term uncapped and rather use the term "softcapped" on all their products. Also, you can pay R199 for a 100gb capped account, but using over 100gb on a 2 meg uncapped account will get you into trouble, and all the way to that 100gb you will get shaped, many times excessively.

Uncapped accounts in South Africa is false advertising and simply not good value for money, unless you get a very expensive premium account, which is also subject to shaping in the end.

Try downloading mkv's instead of mp4's ;)

Out of my 109gb's this month, only about 10gb's is downloads, the rest is streaming. I don't watch TV at all, I stream everything I want to watch, obviously 720p most of the time. Nothing illegal, nothing wrong and nothing over the top, its not me that has the problem its Telkom!

I don't understand you people why can't understand why we complain when we can't use the internet we pay for. Its 2014, and everything is available on the internet today, why should I be denied access if I pay for it? Cool story if you or anyone else doesn't use a lot of data, I use my internet for everything and there for do use a lot.

Have a bit of a different issue.

This weekend I decided to give Netflix & HuluPlus a go via Unotelly after torrenting most of my series. All was fine until yesterday everything on Hulu started to buffer. Checked with speedtest and the results were 0.3mbs. This on a 10meg line with a 4 meg TI account. Called TI and they said that I was being throttled for going over 350gigs in May. Decided to leave it at that and torrent again.

Torrents run at 1000kbps but streaming is non existing even when I switch off my torents. Do not understand how I can get 1000kbps on a throttled 4meg account but can't stream.

Screenshot from uTorrent tonight.

Speedtest.net

Wouldn't mind if it was torrents that were throttled and streaming left alone.

Go overseas and play around with real Internet for more or less same money and be amazed.

Then come back to SA and play around with some dinky-toy-internet and experience the drama, trials, tribulations and frustrations ... and all this mostly and proudly cooked up and served up to you by our beloved local telecoms cartel called Telkom.

I would love to. I would also love to maintain a 1:1 ratio on my torrents. But this is South Africa. We are a 3rd world mess with a corrupt government and a crumbling infrastructure, telecoms included. We are also on the other side of the developed world. Adsl, for instance, is comparatively expensive in Australia and New Zealand. Unfortunately we have to compromise somewhere, heavy downloading simply cannot be sustained without your provider making a loss. But again: they should stop labeling their accounts as uncapped, because it is not uncapped, and they can't afford users who try to utilize it as uncapped either. I struggle to find sympathy for them when they complain, yet they mislead with their advertising.

TheRev404, I suppose that when you stream at 720p a lot you can easily go over 100 gb's a month. I only arrive at home at 6 in the evenings and over weekends I do sports, so I don't get that much time to stream things.

Done 240.035 GBs (4Mb Account) this month and now I have moved into the red section on the usage tracker, now where were my suspicions that TI tweaked the usage thresholds?
