Telkom Internet Capped/Uncapped User Feedback (Pt2)

The sticky thread for TI capped accounts seems to have vanished (iirc there used to be one) so I'll put this here:

No capped account email usage reports for clients received last night plus my personal invoice is about 3 days overdue, I wonder if it's due to the strike?

Update: it all started dribbling in just after 10:00 including my invoice.

Is seems like some traffic to Johannesburg servers are being routed from Johannesburg to Cape Town to Johannesburg.

I have been getting a problem since Sunday. Basically after about 7pm, my internet goes slow and cannot stream anything without buffering.
Its almost like Telkom has a switch at 7pm and makes it go bad.
Not fun...

Noticed the same here, evenings streaming is no more. Also bad routing as mentioned above, constantly bad routing in SA arrrrr. Can't someone do a routing crash course for our ISPs?

It's actually odd. Makes my average ping to Johannesburg 30ms instead of the 10ms it should be.

Internet dead. It seems that a complete line fault. Can't even use the phone.

:( And I was streaming the Apple event

Cannot access datafile.com or rapidgator.net on Telkom with server not found error. Works fine on AH.

Could someone test to confirm please?

Thanks!

Thanks Lara, appreciated. Either this is a DNS / routing issue or Telkom is starting with the Great Firewall borrowed from China...
Seems to be a problem with routing in Netherlands ...

Thanks, will see if it gets sorted out in the next day or two, if not will just move to another ISP for a bit.

Telkom is generally pretty solid with routing. Its been awhile since I haven't had site work for more than an hour or two, this started around Thursday. So, longer than usual... Strange they are both file sharing sites though.

Anybody got any ideas what I can do next?
Basically I use the internet in the evenings for streaming television and gaming. I have a 10mb line with telkom and telkom is also the ISP.
At around 7pm most nights, the speed reduces to the point where streaming is buffering all the time and online gaming results in disconnects and lag.
I rang a few times last week to the Telkom call centre where they refreshed the ports but it didn't help.
I rang tonight and the lady that was helping did the refresh port thing and then told me to do a speedtest.
When I did the test connecting to Johannesburg, the line is fine with ping 28ms, Download speed 8.7Mbps and Upload speed 0.69 Mbps.

But when I connect to London, the result is: Ping 293ms, Download Speed 2.3 Mbps and Upload 0.64 Mbps.

I explained to the helpdesk and I asked if they had any idea what the problem was. I was told that it could be congestion at the exchange but they cant tell. Then she told me I could report a fault but that I would be liable for a R288 charge if they couldn't find a fault or if the fault was mine. At this point, I got frustrated. I have rang a few times with the same problem at the same time in the evening and all they can do is suggest I report a fault. Given that I have had this problem on and off for the last few weeks, it would seem to me that its unlikely that they will do anything apart from blame me and then charge me for it.

What else can I do? I am going to try tomorrow night with Afrihost and see if that helps. Is there any way I can find out if it is the exchange that is congested without incurring extra cost to myself?

Sorry for mini rant, just frustrated with call center and the lack of help.

Thanks Lara, appreciated. Either this is a DNS / routing issue or Telkom is starting with the Great Firewall borrowed from China...

It can also be a firewall or IPS issue on the other end (has been the case in a few issues like this).

We never block anything ...

I will try and have a look.

So once again at 7pm, the internet went bad and couldn't stream anything without buffering.
I switched over to Afrihost and same thing happened there.
Does this mean the exchange that provides my line is congested? If it is, what can be done?
Any ideas?

Aaaarrgggghhhh. They fixed the ADSL line, the line worked yesterday evening, but now my router is stating 'Connecting'. ADSL line is synced (and the stats looks good), but it seems that I can't authenticate with my Telkom ISP login details.

Routing still seems a little off. Still doing a round trip to Cape Town to get back to Johannesburg. Makes some games unplayable.
