Telkom Internet Softcap Feedback

Killing the night surfer on my 50GB softcap account this month. Sickbeard with sabnzbd does all the work and keep my stuff downloading in night surfer time. Only used 22% of my 50GB softcap so far. Not bad and my Telkom account is the details in my router that I use as my main account for gaming, downloading and streaming. :)

Can I just torrent all day long now that I've hit my cap? I'm getting 40-50kbps down and I'm using an Afrihost account for normal browsing on my main PC, but can I just torrent all day and all night now until the end of the month from my media centre or are there charges or anything?

Cheers.

No charges, just the slow speed :)

I'm pretty happy with this really, it means a free 3 to 4 gigs of downloading a day, leaving my Raspberry Pi on all day and night, and if I need something quick, I can just use my AH account :)

It'll be interesting to see if they throttle you further before the 1st Nov.

I doubt it.

I'm on uncapped and only got throttled once, I just kept on torrenting at the low speeds (~45kB/s) 24/7 for the remainder of the month and got quite a bit downloaded.

If you have a backup account for normal stuff that's not so bad, if you get 45kBps 24/7 that's 27GB a week.

If you have a fast line you might be better off not softcapping it and just schedule the download in night surfer times. Works great if you have a fast line but for 2Mbps it might not make that much of a difference.

full blast download 24/7 vs only downloading between 12:00 and 7am. It would be interesting to see which one would get the most data in a month but I think the only download in night surfer would be the best option to get the most data downloaded.

My night surfer downloads so far and I'm not even downloading something every night. Its idle most of the time.

Can someone explain something to me. If I have a 10mb/s line why is my download speed 848kb/s? If I do a speedtest is says 8.6mb/s but as soon as I download something from the internet I get get 848kb/s. Where did all those other mb go?

This is normal and due to protocol overheads.

On a 10Mbit line you should be able to download at around 1MB/sec (Megabyte per second).

You have a 10 megabit line, there is 8 bits in a byte, so if speedtest shows 8.6 megabits divide by 8 should get 1075 kilobytes per seconds.

When on speedtest.net at the top go to settings and then change it from megabits to kilobytes and you will see the speed a download would show you.

Tried to order a bundle this morning (Do Elite Plus), I asked about the discount for the 12 month contract and the first consultant acknowledged it when I asked and then when I wanted to order it she told me no I can't get it. Second consultant didn't know anything about the discount and transferred me to another person, by that time I was running late and had to hang up.

Not only could I not get the discount but they want to charge me almost R1000 for a bundle which is advertised as R839 on their website.

Why is it so hard to get a good ISP these days!?

Don't waste you time. To get the Do Bundles you just need both products and the system automatically adds the discount to your invoice. So as long as you have the 40Mbps VDSL line AND 100GB softcap the system would automatically detect this and add the Do Elite plus discount under the discounts section of the invoice.

Sometimes the call centre people get confused when you ask for the do bundles and they give you the separate prices for each or try and give you a contract or some another stupid story.

As for the 25% discount you will just have to keep on trying to get some one in retentions that actually knows what they are doing to activate the discount for you.

If you do you should see 2 discounts on the discount section of the invoice. Do Elite Plus and a discount amount and Telkom TOC 25% and the remaining term of that discount with the amount.

Thanks for the pro tip! :D

Glad to help. If you already have a softcap account but not the right one just ask them to upgrade it so the details stay the same. If you ever decide to cancel or downgrade if the individual packages like the line and data does not match up to what a do bundle is then the system won't add any discount to the invoice and you would be paying separately which is very expensive so try and always keep them to a do bundle.

Activation of the softcap or upgrades should be instant so you can do it via 10210 or a store.

Nope, not the case. I got the Do Premium Plus bundle and was being charged out of bundle for it (i.e. as two, separate items at full price)

Had to spend like an hour with Accounts as well as get my ticket escalated before it was resolved. The bundling is NOT automatic.
