after months of crappy mweb i moved to TI and guess what? it seems even more crappy??? i was shaped minutes into using the account. I have the 2mbs uncapped and was getting full speed download for 3 mins and then all of a sudden i get only 0.6kbps!! wtf! are u shaped on TI as soon as you log in?? i have pm'd ranger but no response as yet:(

What type of download?

Maybe post a trace route?

I tend to get full speed on most downloads, day or night. The occasional torrent dl also seems fine, although during day time I do limit the speed.

No, you weren't being shaped.

As I replied to you, I started a torrent on my home ADSL line (running rtorrent):

[Throttle 8/200 KB] [Rate 0.3/203.4 KB] [Port: 6947] [U 0/9] [D 31/50] [H 0/32] [S 0/36/768] [F 1/128]

So, 36% into the torrent, I have been doing 200kBps (the rate limit set on rtorrent, my bandwidth schedule isn't work 100% :-/, it is supposed to be lower during peak times) on my own 2Mbps uncapped account (not some special account) on my own 2Mbps ADSL line. You're going through the same site.

So, you may want to try a different torrent, or of you want, PM me the torrent URL/URN/magnet link.
 
ok so i restarted my router and was then getting speeds of 100kbs. i will try a different torrent today and let you know but this torrent had plenty of seeders so we'll see. thanks for the support and i'll keep you posted!

The number of seeds is not a true indicator of how fast a torrent will download.

I find that true p2p torrent sites like TheBox & TheEmpire where you have to maintain a ratio (or purchase gigs) perform well even with few seeds.

i will try other torrents today but generally i always get full speed if there are lots of seeders. One thing im happy about is that the streaming services are working beautifully! no stutters nothing on youtube and man what pure bliss:D with mweb, those guys used to shape youtube for me and that was a deal breaker as far as im concerned. so even if my downloads are slightly shaped i dont really care:) they must just leave the streaming services unshapped and i'll be happy
 
I have terrible latency this afternoon.
Speed tests is good, but latency for local and international is very high.

Could someone in the PE region maybe do a pingtest to compare?

Maybe your Telkom lines don't like todays sunny weather (still cold though) :)

Sheez, I don't know. It happened yesterday as well. Hopefully Ranger can shed some light.

Edit: It is not ISP specific either. Same stats with other account and I've rebooted a couple of times.

Does Telkom do prorata billing? If I sign up on around the 25th or so will they charge me less for April?
 
ok just an update. im now getting full downloads speeds on all torrents and full downloads speeds on all streaming services:D ooooh im so happy!!! please remain that way:whistle:

Download Speed: 207 kbps (25.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 396 kbps (49.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Latency: 234 ms

This is test results for my 2mb line and 10gb telkom account, I'm in Northern suburbs of Western Cape. Been this slow since just before April and also getting constant time outs, specially when trying to download through my PS3

#On my router under status it says my line is down: 2mb - up: 5?? does his mean the problem can be with my telkom internet or do the router just show the speed its supposed to be?

Primary suspect is exchange congestion, if you haven't done so already run a tracert as per the example with no downloads of any type running when you experience the problem.

If your second hop (bolded in the example) is in the hundreds of millesecs you probably have exchange congestion, results will vary depending on the time of day. Not much the helpdesk can do if the exchange needs upgrading.

Called telkom today re an account issue and while speaking to the Options guy he gave me a 25% discount on my dsl fastest line rate, catch is you have to sign up for a year... No problem as I intended to keep my line with telkom anyway. Score.

Please could u indicate which options u had to choose on 10210.

I have trying to get some more info from Telkom, and the best I could get was that if I cancel, they will give me 25% discount. That is not going to help, since I want to upgrade to a 4 meg uncapped and the 25% discount will make it worthwhile.

Ask for options centre. Say you want to upgarde and ask about 25% discount. Note discount only for long time customers.
