Pretty much dead on my end as well. Struggling to play 144p YouTube vids on a 4meg line.

TI is broken today. Was working just fine yesterday evening before I went to play action cricket.

This is really unacceptable.

At least they've given me rebates.

Your download habits during peak time that counts more. The advice from many here is schedule your downloads from around 00:00 - 06:00 daily but you may need to adjust to your own preference. :)

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I'm aware of the 00:00 to 06:00 thing but I wonder if there are any other factors. If local - or even specifically SAIX - traffic had a lower impact for example, it would really open things up.

Best speed I've had with Telkom in the last 4 weeks. Ping has been better. Still can't stream twitch though. Nobody on Telkom in my area can. The routing is absolutely wrecked.

Code:

My ping to Cape Town is 512ms. I won't give my speedtest result, will just embarrass Telkom.

Can you post a tracert to check for congestion? Maybe try changing or flushing your DNS (CMD -> ipconfig/flushdns).

Last I looked up the meaning of "peak/off peak" I found
Meaning:
Of a period of less than maximal use or demand or activity
Context examples:
off-peak telephone rates / off-peak fares
Antonym:
peak (of a period of maximal use or demand or activity)

Now, according to my (useless) logic, where one has a limited resource, e.g. bandwidth available to an exchange, when one achieves maximal demand, the amount to be shared will be less. OTOH, when there is a less than maximal demand, there will be more to be shared around.

So why, during off-peak, is there less bandwidth available?

During peak time, 07:00 to 19:00 I obtain a ping of 20 mS or less and 1.7 Mb/s download.
OTOH during the rest of the time, ping goes to between 170 mS and 1010 mS and download speed can vary between 400 Kb/s and 1.6 Mb/s.

I've tested this with TI uncapped. TI guest and Afrihost free 1GB and results are similar, which, to my mind, confirms that there is a problem at the exchange level.

As I understand it, this is the definition of exchange congestion.

Maybe a knowledgeable formite, preferably Telkomsa, can set my thinking to rights?

We made some changes in the past half hour. I will try and look at any issues reported that still remain after 08h45 today (1 Feb 2014).
no offence but what ever changes have been made, are are of no good as for the promise that this would be rectified, in 2-3 days well that's not happening... so i guess this is another case where they have realized that there is some users that do, use the internet more than what is deemed "acceptable use" I am sure Telkom are using this as a cost saving.. nothing more nothing less.... this is my opinion.. .. i would say speak with your wallets but at the end of the day i am sure they would be more than happy to let go of all the high end users, and hold on to the low handing fruit that browsers here and there... :)

Make that 18h15. It seems there were some problems with the changes we have been waiting for, we had to revert our part this afternoon, and re-implemented around 18h00.

From what I see, things are looking better now.

Anyone else's Telkom internet just died a few minutes ago?
