Telkom lashes out at MTN

Why the sizing problem?

Telkom's rediculously inflated rates for data pipes!
What does that have to do with it?

You plan and cost project and structure it within the known limitations.
This clearly wasn't done, therefore the catastrophic failure.
 
Hit our limits? Really?

Every person in South Africa has a 10Mb/s uncapped connection in his home?

We can always blame telkom because.....well if it wasn't only for telkom over the few (read many) years then the other service providers would not be where they are today.

ok so let's put a little logic into this (my logic is screwed so I may need some help) caveat bulldust coming!!!

the mobile SP (MTN/VC) has an E1 or a bundle of them from a tower say 5 (10mbits) that tower is 3G enabled meaning people can connect to that tower at 1.8mbps so only 6 people can get true throughput but you have to leave space for the voice customers on that tower which bring in more revenue than the data clients.... I wonder who will get preference on that tower? (not sure how much bandwidth a voice channel takes on a cell network, 32, 64k?)
So yes calls are dropped because of insufficient bandwidth to start off with? Or because certain links were down they could not handle the volume of calls/data because they are using other parts of the network?

Either way at the end of the day it is Telkom!! Not because the lines are down but because they cant give people the bandwidth they need at the price that is right in the right amount of time.

Voice typically takes precedence.
 
Well I did post something about hugely inflated Telkodemonopolies pricing :D:AFAIK Grapevine has accepted responsibility for not planning properly and not expecting its overpriced Telkodemonopolies [copper] Digicrap link to under-perform as badly as it did.
By how much did the link under-perform? I can't recall anybody having made a claim like that.

It most likely performed 100% at its specified capacity.

Unfortunately the REQUIRED capacity was somewhat more that the actual capacity, so a backlog built up.

Network and Systems Architecture is a complex thing and often a specific element is overlooked when doing planning, upgrades, maintenance, cut-overs, provisioning, configuration, etc. and some stuff-up happens.

This happens from re-installing an OS on your PC and you forgot to back up that crucial file, right up to the biggest network with the most users in the country (Vodacom!). And boy, can we talk from experience! :)

So, if they forgot to include it in the capacity planning or they mis-calculated, it's one of those things that happen when you mix humans with technology to produce a system.

Now I know there are forumites who believe every service should be provided perfectly provisioned at a 0% failure rate and that humans and machines should be infallible (obviously those who believe this are infallible themselves :rolleyes:) but the reality is stuff happens.

Unfortunately in this case the knock-on effect was very embarrassing and caused a fair amount of trauma.

But, as Dilbert always say:

If you, as an Engineer, do you job perfectly, you get a plastic frame after 40 years.
If you don't, people die.

Engineers don't get the money, fast cars and fast women. Yet without them we'd still be in a cave banging rocks together for entertainment. ;)

As I see, everything points to MTN as the responsible party. They run the competition, they make the decision how many SMS's they think would come through. They thought they would get twice the number of SMS's as it was the final.
Grapevine would have provided the infrastructure to cope with that. There is no reason for them to massively overprovide, and AFAIR there is no suggestion that their equipment failed or that they underprovided capacity to cope with the SMS volume MTN thought they would get.
 
Very informative,Telkom is telling the mobile networks to stop blaming it and self provide...telkom doesn't have backlogs it's mtn & voda that have backlogs for which they should provde infrastructure or wait & wait for Telkom

Doesn't everyone have to use Telkom?
