Currently yes. It is not a refurbished network but a totally new network.

There is also fibre from the exhange to the UMC, which is pretty close to your premises. From there it is copper to your premises.

Where there is a high fault rate on the copper network, they will replace that piece of copper.

That's why it is important to log cable faults - else they think everything is OK with your cable.
 
Meh.. I cant take this anymore. Im gonna go live in the Kalahari desert for a couple of years and then hopefully come back to a little change

someone please advise how to check what line i have. When i moved I asked for a 4 MB line but the speeds are just horrible so i'd like to make sure on my side. I don't have a router, have a telkom Zyxel so how do i check on that once i enter the 10.0.0.2 area ?
 
I know this is a WHENWE comment, but just returned from an 18 month stint in Belgium and there out home download varied between 1.5 and 3 Mb's. At the college where I did my Cisco courses we were clocking 14Mb's download - no kidding!!! SO if we can minimise a GENUINE download to 1Mb (no matter how far from the server we are) that would be a gigantic leap into the present!!!!!
 
The problem with asking for a 4 Mb line is that if your line cannot achieve this speed then the "line hunting" for this speed will in fact make your possible speed slower still. The reason for this is the hunting for this speed creates a deteriated speed. Rather cap your download to 1024, then your line will spend more effort on downloading at that speed than hunting for the best speed. This is also linked to how far you live from the Telkom server servicing your area.

10.0.0.2 ->advance option->status page->
under interface status check rate for dsl

Well I was downloading Arch Linux from ftp.is.co.za using my local Web Africa account. Now technically the fastest download speed I ever managed on my 384k line was 38.5kbps.

This evening its varying from 40kbps to 60kbps.
