Its not based on MACs. Its based on ESN.elaborate what you mean ..
backend doesnt mean what you think it does...
Netflix may have been provided a list of MAC addresses to block which is quite common.
MACs can be spoofed.
By backend he means the Netflix servers. They do an ESN check and if the device is not on the authorised list it does not get access to the service.
An ESN, or Netflix Electronic Serial Number, is a globally-unique identifier for each device. Even if you have two of the same TVs at home: same brand, model and year, and they both have the Netflix TV app installed, they do not have the same ESN.
