Telkom Mobile LTE Speedtest Results - post trial

Outstanding. Hopefully your upload comes up to 7Mbps soon. How far are you from the tower?

More and more 50Mbps+ is the norm for TM LTE.
 
Unfortunately on my side I am unable to get more than 20 mbps, peaking at around 10 - 18 mbps - I suspect the base station is congested or hasn't been configured correctly cause it doesn't matter what time of day I run the test, return is the same

I'm in Pta Gardens. I've been on TM LTE for about 3 months. Speeds were 12-19 mbps down and 4mbps up. I called TM and asked if this was normal since I expected a better speed. A consultant told me the congestion on the tower etc. etc. is influencing my speed. I am 2,3 km from the base station but I have 2 Poynting hi-gain antennas on my roof. After some queries my speed suddenly increased to 50+ mbps down. I suspect it was some adjustment at the base station. I'm still working on the upload.

Congestion for LTE is not the same as 3G. There was a user from the UK who posted a clear case for this.

Your experience was the same as mine. Overnight my speeds tripled and quadrupled. It definitely seems to be a configuration thing. Generally you will not see more than 7Mbps up on Telkom Mobile, even if the download is 90Mbps. Definitely not symmetric like MTN.
 
Telkom Mobile uses TDD LTE, so I think from the 20Mhz about 2Mhz is configured for upload, the remaining 18Mhz is dedicated for downlink, even if your LTE tower has 100Mbps backhaul your upload/download depends the allocated bandwidth.

Not necessary - still under the impression they can throttle profiles for load balancing purposes to be fair to other uses.

Telkom Mobile did send in a case no: on my behalf, still waiting for feedback - cause on weekends the base station acts up

Well you are getting massive gain from using your external antenna. What is the speed like *with* the external antenna and after the gain improves so much?

Same results nothing has practically changed. I am under the impression the base station needs a firmware update or worst case scenario the base station is congested!
 
Oddly I also noticed I gained an extra 2Mbps on my upload of late. I always used to get 7Mbps upload max, now I get up to 9Mbps.

Last night my tower was flying half mast. I was only getting 2 bars signal and around 12Mbps.

Online gaming was unaffected, thankfully. :) And 24 hours later the tower is almost back to normal with 5 bars signal again.

Off topic but just a question here. Does the frequency that Telkom Mobile use for LTE travel futher than that of Vodacom and MTN?

Th reason I'm asking is cause sadly Telkom Mobile only has 1 LTE tower in the whole Richards Bay sharing a mast with Vodacom and MTN which has LTE on the same tower but I can't pick that LTE up from them. They have like MAX 2KM range and then thats about pushing it. That tower is like 6km from me and I am able to still pick up LTE signal in my LTE mifi in the house with no antenna. The speeds are sub 10Mbps but still very impressive distance.

The latency is not too bad aswell and is quite stable.
 
I can directly measure MTN and TM against each other. They seem much of a muchness to me. Of course both signals come from the same tower, the very tower I get service from on my B593.
