Telkom Mobile roaming on Vodacom

This is what im paying a premiium for and locked intona contract for
What is the premium you are paying for? Telkom is cheapest on data, works well for the price I'm paying.

Paying any price with zero data throughput is a premium with a speedtest like that i should be getting this for free

Just messing with you, agreed though, it does stink when you have signal and no traffic.

Ive just returned back to Johannesburg, from Kruger Park, and have made some interesting observations on where TM are with their Vodacom roaming agreement.
It was pretty easier to see when I was roaming on MTN, because I would see an "R", and also when I was roaming on Vodacom, as I would have signal in areas where TM did not have coverage.

About 45min out of JHB is when I started doing my "investigations", because at that point I could be sure I was out of TM coverage.
For about the next 200km I had 3g/4g coverage with no "R", meaning I could only be roaming on Vodacom.
However, signal was very patchy, and often I wouldn't have signal while someone else travelling with me, who had a Vodacom Sim, had much better coverage.
I thought this was quite strange, but can only assume not all Voda towers in that area was turned on for TM roaming.

The next +- 200km, I had almost no Vodacom coverage, except for a few minutes here and there, but pretty much was roaming on MTN the whole time.
Once we got into the Park (and still roaming on MTN), I searched for Mobile networks, to see what I could pick up.
Interestingly enough, I could find "TELKOM-SA", Which could only mean this was coming from a Voda Tower, but was not able to connect to it.

In other areas of the work, where there was good Vodacom signal, I was not even able to find Telkom when searching for it.

My conclusion is that TM are well on their way in completing the change over, but still have a little way to go.

Hope you all found this interesting :)

I am also waiting for roaming on TM to come live at my house. Nothing at the moments.

Will see how it goes as I have zero TM signal

Where I was only able to roam on MTN yesterday, it seems that the Vodacom tower got 'upgraded' today at our farmhouse. There's a new option when manually selecting networks. And it's working well. 65505 or TelkomSA-R. See attached screenshots.

65505 is Telkom PLMN ID so I don't think the Vodacom tower got upgraded I just think it started broadcasting Telkom's PLMN ID and even though it shows -R it still recognized as a "home" network meaning Telkom Only bundles should still work unless Telkom start disabling that like Cellc did with their Fixed LTE deals.

Thanks for the explanation Cavedog ;)

Goodnews for people coming through phalaborwa gate. The 65505 had just popped up last night after some downtime.

Best S10 deal is on Telkom Mobile... I'm very interested in this.

So connected to 65505 - seems to be a Vodacom tower from the tower ID. Loaded Telkom only bundle. Kept getting the OOB message. Also there seems to be no coverage from Vodacom towers where there is Telkom LTE coverage. So seems like it is going to be a nightmare if you select 65505 manually and then are on the move.

My iPhone keeps switching by itself.. think the MTN tower is kicking me off

From the looks of things.

Cell C and MTN Base Stations both broadcast Cell C's single PLMN of 65507, this creating seamless handover.

Telkom roaming on Vodacom's network seems to be setup differently, maybe Telkom and Vodacom are struggling to get it right?

Telkom Home Network 65502 (Telkom Base Stations) Displays: TelkomSA
Telkom Roaming Network 65505 (Vodacom Base Stations) Displays: TelkomSA-R

I don't think seamless handover will work for Telkom in this case, like it does for Cell C.

I have a feeling this is being done on purpose, to use two PLMN's to distinguish between on-net and off-net services like data.

Anyone know when Cape Town moves to Vodacom roaming? My phone is permanently on MTN due to weak Telkom signal in my office.

Your internet access has been paused because you are using out of Bundle Data. Dial *180# to purchase a new bundle, or open your browser for more options.

Above as soon as I select telkom-R - so there we have it Telkom only bundles will not work on Vodacom roaming.
