Telkom Mobile roaming on Vodacom

Managed to get the mnc of an LTE tower while driving through a rural area. My phone didn't have the -R next to Telkom but was definitely connected to a Vodacom tower according to unwiredlabs

I managed to connect to Vodacom at Bay West in PE. The signal disappeared before getting back to Westering.

Very glitchy also while I was driving the roaming Telkom appeared with many different names in the network selection page such as
“T”
“Telkom SA” in this case I saw two Identical names, one as 655-02 and one as 655-05
“Telkom SA (3G)”

Not sure if this was asked or mentioned before but can I use SmartBroadband Wireless Prepaid on Vodacom roaming?

The Vodacom roaming is not as seem less as they probably hoping for. Phone still prefers MTN roaming. On the Samsung S10 TelkomSA is listed twice and 1 is obviously Vodacom roaming. One is 65502 TelkomSA and other one is 65505 TelkomSA.

My S10 does not switch as easy to 65505 as Vodacom to Rain for example. With Telkom it prefers 65502 TelkomSA which is home network and when there is no coverage at all signal goes then suddenly bounces back full signal on TelkomSA 65505. Sometimes when the signal goes it just switches to MTN-SA R.

I think The Vodacom roaming would be better when they completely disable MTN roaming. Telkom made a mistake with this Vodacom roaming they were just supposed to reach a deal with MTN to have the seamless roaming activated instead of current roaming deal. MTN has better coverage anyways. WHen i was traveling this easter my Telkom liked to stick to MTN Roaming and I could make calls and stream youtube to my car sound system without any issues. Vodacom coverage is not as good as MTN and my S8 with my Vodacom contract was on E way more than I liked.

Pic of Telkom Roaming on Vodaom.

@bwana Hi, seems like your the guy to speak to.
Not sure if this has been answered before but.
Currently I have Telkom LTE, think it is only due to the Vodacom Telkom roaming deal as I doubt that we have any Telkom towers. Would I be able to use the data of SmartBroadband Wireless Prepaid?
I tried applying for a contract, and it got approved but got suspended afterward due to their map showing I am not covered. But I bought a Telkom prepaid sim for just this reason, and found that it shows Telkom SA and have LTE speeds. Thus trying to go the prepaid route.

We still only have 65505 3G showing, no 2G or 4G yet.
But manually scanning and forcing a TM sim to 65505 fails.
Still in Beta is seems

managed to connect to a Vodacom tower on LTE but it did not show on 655-05 or 655-02, it showed as if I was on the Vodacom home network.

I'm very curious to see how this is going to work for Telkom-only bundles because I cannot manually select 655-05 when 655-02 is present as it just reconnects me to 655-02

Likewise. I can also tell you that if I am not roaming on EMPTY-N, my battery life is CRAP!

After Telkom fixed the battery drain issue for me battery last the longest if there is a Telkom simcard in. Vodacom not so much due to VoLTE

ok, 65505 4g is back for me.... if manually selected it switches back to 65502 in minutes... guess its very seamless now

I'm still slightly confused about this...

65505 means a Telkom Mobile tower and 65502 means Vodacom?

65502 is Telkoms own network TelkomSA. 65505 is the network ID Vodacom towers broadcast and it also identifies as TelkomSA. So manually switching would be hard because they use the exact same name. I think Telkom set it to prefer it's own network first.
