My upgrade is due for April 2016

I compared prices from Vodacom and Telkom and concluded that Telkom's SmartPlan 100 is much cheaper than Vodacom's Smart Small

Eg. :

Sim Only -
Vodacom - 200MB data, 75 minutes, 200 SMS = R209pm
Telkom - 1GB data (only with device) , 100 minutes, 5 for 50 sms = R99pm

Samsung S6 32GB

Vodacom on Smart Small : 449pm (uChoose 469pm)
Telkom on SmartPlan100 : 399pm

Telkom also has better LTE and LTE-A and coverage in my areas.
Does Telkom have good services with voice?

Telkom is also rapidly upgrading all of their networks to be the best in SA, so are they?

I plan to get the LG G5 or Samsung S7 when I upgrade.

We've known this forever.

Telkom is one of the cheapest networks in ZA, but unlike CellC, their network actually works.

Then why is Telkom's customer base so low compared to other providers?

Is it because the people don't know what Telkom is capable of?

I've been with Telkom mobile for more than 2 years now ... Signed up for the 10GB Internet 5 promotion more than 2 years ago. I was so impressed with the network performance that I migrated my primary number from Vodacom to a Smartplan 50 and finally I cancelled my ADSL last year and signed up for their Home Office LTE 50GB as well. I couldn't be happier.

From my experience it's the most reliable/stable mobile network. I think people are reluctant to sign up with Telkom Mobile because of the bad reputation the fixed line operation has.

I would highly recommend it ... if you have sufficient coverage.

So I'm in the same boat as OP, and started looking at Telkom mobile contracts (LG G4, R399 pm, 100 minutes and 1 Gig data pm) is better then anything Vodacom can offer. I was just a bit worried about the coverage. Went out and got myself a Telkom pay as you go sim today. Worked fine at office, but got home and didn't want to connect to anything, until I switched on roaming.

My question is to you (and anyone else out there who can answer this) Why is it connecting to roaming? And in doing that, am I getting charged more, or the same rates as if I wasn't on roaming?

The last thing I want is to sign up a contract with them, and the speeds are piss poor, with a huge bill.

Same rates, doesn't cost you anything.

And the why? Because it roams on MTN. Maybe Telkom should up their prices and expand the network faster so that you don't have to roam...? Thought so :p

From what I'm reading... you're paying less through telkom to use the MTN network :P And now its the best thing since sliced bread. But go straight on mtn and people complain about callquality/low coverage etc. amazing how the mind works

I swapped from MTN to Telkom mobile last year. Call quality is about the same, I never really had issues with MTN on that front. Had issues with them using when reaching my data cap though, that never seemed to want to cap. And the amount of data MTN gives was much lower than telkom, which was a big deal for me. Anything less than 500MBs should really not be given with a smartphone.

Have had Telkom mobile for two years, my wife four.
My experience is the network is horrible and this is in Randburg and Roodepoort, I am constantly on roaming and my contract is an old one which only has 75mb roaming data.
Voice quality is okay thanks to roaming on MTN, my contract expired this month. I decided to maybe give it a try with the 1gig any time network bundle attached. The Telkom mobile shops at Northgate, Cresta and Clearwater only have P8 lites woohoo

Okay going to attempt to cancel my Telkom mobile contract. Spent three hours in a queue to only get told at the end sorry they didn't load everything up properly last week and you need to come back. Turns out you also need to go in store to cancel Wtf! In this day and age I have to go in store to cancel, in store to upgrade, have to do everything as if I was getting a new contract.
With Vodacom it's walk in, say I am wanting to upgrade my contract and ten minutes later walk out. Well that was two years ago on my tablet. To cancel it I phoned in Jan and it was done.
