Telkom Night Surfer / Soft Cap

What apps do you use to download with? Most torrent & nzb clients include a scheduler so you can set them to start at 00:05 and finish at 07:00. Also make sure your pc time is synced to a ntp server (I use the saix ones) just to be sure your time is accurate.

Not sure how your router is configured but you could set it to bridged mode with the fnb account always on and then on your pc scheduled it to dialup pppoe session with your telkom account at 12:05 and disconnect at 07:00 and at those same times also scheduled it to start/stop whatev clients you use to download with.

I'm using SABNZDB/Sickbeard to schedule downloads - might have to try the 12.30 - 6.30 to see if it works rather.

Updates of some sort :D

I'm pretty good with making sure none of this happens, but you never know I suppose... ;)

That's overkill... if you really want to do it, give yourself 5 minutes either way (00h05 to 06h55).

TBH it is not necessary. Just ensure your PC's clock is correct!!

If we are totally honest, I shouldn't have to even leave 5 minutes.
But something is obviously not working.

I don't leave any time, hence the PC clock comment...

I've only picked up an issue once... right at the beginning of the amended night surfer hours. Reported it to ranger and it was sorted out pronto.

Maybe I should try this, as I'm not having any joy with telkom directly.
They simply say I must disconnect after midnight

It's fairly easy to setup an automated dial-up session.

  • Ensure that your modem is setup to bridge mode.
  • Create to two BAT scripts, one for connecting and one for disconnecting, you can use the following code in the script:
  • rasdial ConnectionName Username Password
  • Example:
    Code:
    rasdial WebAfrica eeo20@wa *******
  • rasdial ConnectionName /DISCONNECT
  • Example:
    Code:
    rasdial WebAfrica /DISCONNECT
  • Create a scheduled task to connect daily, set it to connect a minute or two before your downloads are due to start.
  • Create a scheduled task to disconnect daily, set it to disconnect a minute or two after your downloads are due to stop.
  • Done.

I've got the VOX bolt-on uncapped and 40mbps + 150GB account with Afrihost, I only use about 40% of my Afrihost account on a monthly basis and download about 300GB on VOX. The scripts are setup on my media PC and haven't failed once in the last year.

thanks for this.
TBH I've never done anything like this before, but I'll give it a bash

I have been using 50GB softcap for a long time and night surfer data usage is calculated very accurately.....

lol not really. Just the first month was like 400GB but now not so much. I mean I'm on a 10Mbps Telkom uncapped account and my usage is less than 105GB for the month so far. :)

Does this window offer unlimited data or is it fixed? Currently sitting on a 2mbps uncapped account. Tried it this month w/o starting a new session scheduled downloads and it didn't work because I eventually got throttled down to 40kbps downstream.

Anyone?

It's unlimited, so in 7hrsx30days=210hrs you should be able to manage around 170GB on a 2Mb/s line allowing for 15% protocol overheads.

Thanks @ponder. That's really odd. Then I guess I'll start a new session each time and use afrihost during the day.

Then you still downloaded a lot outside NightSurfer time. The implementation of NighSurfer is currently identical between capped and uncapped.

I would like to know why you would use Afrihost during the day ...

I must say I am really impressed with your Softcap recently. Have p2p shaping been relaxed on softcap accounts? It feels as if they are running much much faster as a while back.

ranger maybe PM him asking for his account details and check out his usage statistics as his issue seems out of the norm. Maybe you can shed some more light.
