I gave Telkom a call this morning to order a WiMax line for my office (to be used as a backup link).
The helpful lady at Telkom stated that they are not accepting new orders for WiMax as their suppliers are not supplying them with equipment and they do not know when they will.

They told me end of June/Beginning of July. I need my Wimax moved from JHB to CPT but they refused. I have to cancel the Wimax, give the equipment back and then get new equipment in Cape Town, even though I told them I will assume all cost in transporting the equipment, I'd even pay for a reinstallation.

Can anyone tell me who the 3rd party installer is? I want to try talk to them direct

Hahahaha... :D

soz for o/t.

Well she was nice enough to tell me the truth (I hope). She could have accepted the order and there I would have been waiting in anticipation, and drooling, for something that will never happen....

Yep.... I called on the 9th of June did the sign up and the lady did say 1 month. Well called today and they now say sorry its put on hold. Please call again month end.

Ho Well.....

Telkom/Screamer/ETC WiMAX

I just called Telkom also for a WiMAX application. They took my details so i am hoping there can be something done for me.

What i like about their offering is that there is NO data included. You can choose your OWN ISP and tailor to your OWN requirements. I wanted to go Screamer but firstly i can't even get a coverage map or detail from their website.

I would like a connnection but i would ALSO like to select, for example, a international package of 2GB and LOCAL of 28GB. Well There is an ISP that offers this but I am not an advertising agency! However, I am spending R400 a month AT LEAST on 3G and could do the SAME with Telkom WiMAX for rental AND the 30GB data package!!!

Telkom = R240 for equipment and ISP R130. That is ONLY 370 for the LOT!!!

That's what I want!! I want what i need and that's that. Give the customer what they want. Don't wrap a piece of dog dropping in a ribbon and say "look, it's all pretty" - it is STILL dog dropping!!

I wish they would launch a faster one though...512kbps really isn't up to standard (then again what is in Telkom terms).

I'm really looking for a viable wireless solution as I'm tired of cables getting stolen in our area >.<

Well this IS south africa so regardless of the service provider we are going to have to bend over and take it like a man anyway.

The big boys do their trailblazing weekend trips etc - that's why they live!! CERTAINLY NOT to give us something descent. South Africa will remain 3rd or 4th world with monopolies in play!!! Regardless of any technical advancements we have access to we will still remain behind EVEN India!! And OUR government has a LOT to do with it.

I think it is time we ALL get asylum in Canada LOL... Leave the I-JITS to their own devices!!

@shearder - any word back on your WiMAX link? I applied yesterday at a Telkom store and am just wondering how long it usually takes?

Hey rapid

Well i called them a week ago to query and the woman told me they no longer do WiMax and she does not know why the order was even taken.

Perhaps you should call them and confirm whether it will even happen. As usual, i think Telkom and Eskom are the same company - no one that works there actually knows what is going on!!

Hmmm... think I'll give them a call now with my reference number and hear what they say. Otherwise I'm gonna have to get a standard ADSL line..

Ok, just called them - my order is showing on their system and she says they should call me in the next week or two. Hmmm... maybe I'll be lucky and get my WiMAX?

Yeah, lucky, or it is one of those call center people who has no clue.
I spoke to 4 different people at the telkom call center and got 3 different answers, yes they take orders, no wimax is no longer available for new orders and they do not know....

Keep hassling Telkom, and let us know if they install. Then it will be me and Telkom!!!!!

Hey rapid

I got a reference number - which i still have. So, when i called to follow up the woman said oh no they are not doing it - i said i had a ref number and she was surprised. Anyways, she checked on it and just said she didn't know why i got that number because they no longer do it.

You'll find 10 different stories from 10 different people at Telkom. Just keep phoning. If the order was placed someone must know that they are still doing it (or started again) and that means the information hasn't filtered through all call centre agents yet. They get emailed with this apparently.
