Hi All

I,m looking for pointers here as to a)what is wrong and b)who to contact.

This upgrade was done mid November.

What I'm stuck with:
  • Telkom 4 Meg Line
  • 4 Meg Home Uncapped from VOX telecom
  • Billion 800VGT Router

I have confirmed that the exchange can handle the 4 meg line and I am 1.12 Km from the exchange.

Router Info

SNR Margin 29.0db Down | 13.0db Up
Line Attenuation 17.5 db Down | 6.5 db Up
CRC Errors 0 Down | 0 Up
Latency Fast | Fast

Speed Test

Download Speed 1688 Kbs (211 kb/s transfer rate)
Upload Speed 362 Kbs (45.3kb/s transfer rate)
Latency: 35 ms

The speed test done here was actually quite good as most of the time the speed for download is mostly in the 175 to 185 kb/s transfer rate.

Your best bet is to sign up for a couple free test accounts to see if it is the isp account or possible exchange related.

+1

It sounds very likely that it is your ISP account although it could just need a port reset done.
Get a free test account, like one from WebAfrica and see whether you get full speeds or not.

If not, call Telkom and ask for a port reset. If so, then you know it is something on Vox's side or their uncapped account is pretty ****ty.

Busy opening an account at afrihost right now. :D

Wil be testing tonight

Is 4 Mbps the max that your exchange can handle? Those are the old types, and it is then very likely that there could be exchange congestion. The free test accounts will show that though. If it is the exchange you can try and find out from Telkom if it planned for an upgrade.

You can also use the following Telkom guest ADSL credentials on your modem:
username: guest@telkomadsl
password: guest
... and then use the following speedtest URL: http://capetown.spdtst.saix.net/

My guess is that VOX is shaping your account.
