Hi,

I saw an article stating that from 1 February Telkom is slashing their Uncapped ADSL prices by up to 40%.

do Uncapped Basic Up to 1 Mbps account - R329
do Uncapped Advanced Up to 2 Mbps account - R459
do Uncapped Premium Up to 4 Mbps account - R699
do Uncapped Premium Plus Up to 10 Mbps account - R999

Thats ADSL line and uncapped data. These new prices will make Telkom 1 of the cheapest ISP's for an uncapped bundle, cheaper than MWEB nogal!

So my question is to those on TI (telkom internet), what are your experiences/gripes? How does TI compare to the other ISP's?

And they also removing speed restrictions - ISP's will have to respond to this as they really are attractive prices!

Looks like Telkom wants to be a major player in the uncapped game. I wish the other ISP's respond and reduce their pricing on the 2MB account especially MWEB, who I am currently with. To jump from R339 for 1MB AIC to R599 AIC is absolutely ridiculous! And currently the speeds on MWEB havent been as great as they used to be before anyway....

I'm eager to see hear what the guys on TI have to say about the speeds etc. If it good I will join the TI ranks and save myself R140 a month.

I will note that people's experience up until now won't necessarily be indicative of what their experience will be after 1 February.

There are a lot of changes, and it just isn't possible to test the exact behaviour of hundreds of thousands of people and the internet.

We are doing everything we can to ensure it at least doesn't get worse, and hopefully improve it.

I will be monitoring the changes closely. I was happy with TI uncapped for over a year, but the past few weeks have been painful. Just hope performance returns to the way it was last year...

Thanks ranger as always for keeping us in the loop, so many have yet to realize just how valuable you, Optimal01 and MickeyD's input have been :) / will be....

A friendly request - Has the extra capacity mentioned been ordered/completed back in August pre 1>2 here ?

On the market for ADSL, these prices are tempting. But most posts on MyBB about telkom ADSL are negative. Skeptical

Have you looked at the Telkom Internet user feedback thread?

I don't see the negative feedback you are referring to. Three months between posts tells me that there are more users that are satisfied with the service. Have a look at the other ISP threads and see all the negative comments.

Telkom ADSL and Telkom Internet, the ISP, are two separate entities.

Have downloaded 385 gigs with mweb this month and have received a letter stating if I continue to Abuse then they will cancel my service.

I am also considering moving to telkom. I doubt they will tell me they are cancelling my service.

If MWEB speed will continue to deteriorate it will be goodbye MWEB hello Telkom very soon .

I'm looking to move just to pay 699 bundle 4mb uncapped a month. That's some nice, post tax money back in my pocket.

I took a quick look at the 4mb ('Premium'?!?) option for 699ZAR:

Speed Restrictions

6am - 6pm: up to 650 Kbps
6pm - 10pm: up to 1 Mbps
10pm - 6am: up to 4 Mbps
No restrictions on local data

Looks like another product being deceptively advertised as 'uncapped' & their AUP says that they will throttle the highest users in any area.

Anyone on Telkom here and if so what kinda speeds are you getting.

Please post some speed tests and your latency in online games.

Also what kinda speeds are you getting while downloading and do they throttle you or have a rolling threshold?

+1 on that but they can only say after 1st of Feb. Then new system comes into play if i am not mistaken... just sit and wait a bit...

Currently using my friends adsl acc but looks like i'll be a Telkom customer soon enough.

New Telkom Uncapped 10MB, is it worth the BLOODY RED TAPE? BE WARNED

My experience with Telkom Uncapped 10MB since Feb 2nd.

Monday:
International speeds are average 2mbit/s at night.
Torrents speeds not usable *anytime*
Banking in business hours is crawling.
Youtube videos pause and buffers very often.
Ebay is slow, cnn.com takes forever to load.
Overall international access just don't feel as responsive as my 10MB Mweb Account.

Downloading linux ISO files from ftp.is.co.za runs at a peak of speeds of about 3.5bmit/s in the day.
With the MWEB account a few minutes later, full 8.2mbit/s.

SAIX hosted speed test to Rosebank d.l shows 8.2mbit/s (The full transfer speed I am expecting to see)
SAIX hosted speed test to Capetown d.l shows 6.7mbit/s (Why?)
Speedtest.net to Mweb d.l. max at 5.2mbit/s

Tuesday:
Internet access is a pain, my line feels like a 2mb line, Test with Mweb there's no issues, full t/f speed (8.2mbit/s).
Back on Telkom account.
Pinging the first hop shows packet loss without other traffic on my line. (That support call took 2 hours to Tech support to finally reveal there might be an *unknown* issue)
Then discover my line sync speed was changed from 10mb down to 6mb and had to play another round of support calls to have that fixed back to 10mb (Another 45 minutes of my life down the blue Toilet)
Email is crawling, pinging smtp.telkomsa.net +100ms.

When I connect with the 10mb mweb account, absolutely no issues, everything is *very pretty*, THANK YOU MWEB.

Come Wednesday:
I phone Telkom and ask to have the account cancelled.
The reply was:
Sure!, If you cancel now the account will stop working immediately. (Good)
BUT you still need to pay the full amount of R699 with no pro rata credit. (Wooot)
(Let me get this straight: I have no pro rata option and therefore pay the full amount for the account, BUT, if I cancel early at my convenience within the month I don't get to use it for the remainder of the calendar month as it dies on the spot!)
And if I happen to cancel a day past the calendar month, I get to pay R699 for another month!!??!!

Mama Telkom: That is correct sir.

I knew I should never have fallen for their bloody PR tricks, that account will go down the blue toilet.

Not fair game here, * I need to break something *, Ugggghhhh
