Telkom Soft-Capped Services

torrents are back for me this morning after doing a quick test. will see tonight tonight when i do a proper test.

Thank goodness, trying to dwnld topgear and Spartacus but torrents were dead!
Hopefully 2day it works.
Saving some data for Sony feb 20 event.

I wonder if we can use the 40g at decent speeds?

I don't know, I've heard speak of speads around 384k, that's stone age stuff. Think streaming of any kind will be on the no-fly list. That 40gig they tempt you with is probably only good enough for email and maybe checking facebook. Just so you don't feel too cut off from the interwebs. :D

The 40 gigs is at full speed, but it involves paying per gig via the auto topup. The 40 gig limit is a safety measure designed to stop the auto topup from running wild at per gig pricing.

The 384 softcap doesnt seem to have any limit(within reason), which is rather amazing because it's free.

The softcap is a free addition meant for browsing. If you want to torrent at full speed either topup or upgrade to an uncapped account.

Wait, what? So I have 20gb at full speed. then after that, i have 40gb at full speed, but have to pay per gig, when does the softcap kick in? I'm confused now

I already explained it to you yesterday.

That's not what the 40GB means. Once you hit the 20 gig cap you have three option available to you. You can top up, auto top up (with 40gigs being the maximum amount) or softcap. The softcap goes at roughly 384kbps and is not related to the 40 gig limit.

You need to log into the tit tracker and choose what you want to happen when you hit the 20 gig cap. The default option is the softcap.

If you choose to auto topup, it'll charge you per gig as it auto topups with a maximum of 40 gigs.

TopUP 0.0 MB

Speed test results
Download Speed: 407 kbps (50.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 392 kbps (49 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 31 ms
Realy dont like the low speeds

Will update again tomorrow.

Well I warned you all who jumped at "Uncapped Soft-Cap"

Just got Soft-Capped (sounds like it should be called "Limp-Dick") and now ENJOYING 40KB on NTP.

Earlier tonight it was flying at 620KB - now they insult me with 40KB - they can stick that where the sun don't shine

and yes - there will be a Cancellation of service after years of TI subs.

I think the soft capped idea is brilliant for 95% of their user base.

Anybody on soft cap that can comment on Live Streaming on SuperSport.com or even just highlights? Does it work or not. It worked in the past on local bandwidth so I'm just curious if the Soft Cap totally replaces your local only full seed browsing with a throttled all service experience.

I dont have any high hopes for that as youtube looses connection while playing a video sometimes.
If I can remember my password for that I'll test for you tonight

Their mail said that all P2P and streaming services will be blocked once you reach your soft cap. The soft cap is purely a decreased speed with unlimted browsing. From a network usage side it's understandable as P2P and streaming is the highest bandwidth usage applications/services, that’s why ISP's have uncapped products. Soft Cap and Uncapped according to ISPA is not the same thing, therefore it helps knowing the deffinitions.

Tested this out last night, a big no go.
20s view 5s buffer :(

Well it seems to be working exactly as planned.

Uncapped browsing is what most of their user base would want.

What torrents and streaming? Here is an uncapped account.

I agree that it is what most of the user base would have wanted but by taking away the full speed local 20GB cap I myself can now do less than before... Don't see why they couldn't have kept the 20GB local full speed and only thereafter limit local data. Before I was able to stream Live sports on SuperSport on this account for the whole month now it's being shaped. Understand the reasoning but local data doesn't cost Telkom anything.
