Telkom Speed upgrades

I really appreciate your answer. I'm on the same page now. Thanks!

Here be my stats:

Would 10mb speeds be achievable?

Highest you could sync at is: 6359 kbps

Look at mine

Operational Mode G.Dmt.BisPlus
Annex Type AnnexA
Upstream 511800
Downstream 4095900
SNR Margin(Upstream) 31.5 dB
SNR Margin(Downstream) 42.40 dB
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 0.0 dB
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 9.5 dB

That sucks. Thanks for the reply.

What are my options now? Does Telkom even offer a 6mb option? Or would it necessitate a drop down back to 4mb?

Hows mine look?

Mode: ADSL2+
Line Coding: Trellis On
Status: No Defect
Link Power State: L0

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin (dB): 15.8 29.9
Attenuation (dB): 24.5 9.8
Output Power (dBm): 12.8 0.0
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 19024 1284
Rate (Kbps): 4096 511

Given your stats your connection should be fairly stable at 6mbps.

They don't offer a 10mbps data option but you can go to other isp's for that. In term of the actual line rental it's either 4mbps at R299 or 10mbps synced at 6mbps at R425.

Really good, you'll get 10mbps.

think mine has been upgraded...

I was on 4mb, line is showing its now at 8mb.
My line stats have got worse since the swap to 8mb but it still seems stable.

8mb sync.jpg

However telkom site says my maximum speed is at 4mb but my line is currently at 10mb -_-

Thanks a bunch. So I simply phone 10210 and ask them to synch my line at mbps - which will at least see my speed up from where it was? They can set synch speeds individually?

Hmm. Your Line Attenuation (DS) is pretty high, and your SNR Margin (DS) is already pretty low. You could ask them to sync you at 10Mb and see how the stability is, but it could go either way.

That would be pushing it off the cliff, his line is already perfect.

Use the website to calculate theoretical speeds that you can achieve: http://www.speedguide.net/dsl_speed_calc.php

on what does telkom line work the adsl or adsl2?

if adsl2 i can get 8mbps

but on my router it says this

Modulation Type ADSL_G.dmt
Downstream Upstream
Current Rate(Kbps) 2048 512
Max Rate(Kbps) 9320 992

So is Telkom on schedule and 4Mbps users syncing at higher speeds?

Well to me it seems like there are still a lot of Exchanges/DSLAMs that do not support 10mbps yet. The ADSL checker gave me some hope when it showed my speed as 10mbps but after talking to TelkomZA I now understand why it shows like that. The billing product 4/10mbps was renamed to 10mbps to make space for the new 4mbps billing product. As soon as the 2 to 4mbps upgrades start next week will the ADSL checker start showing the correct current speeds as the 4mbps billing product will be available again.

PS: I connect to a mini DSLAM (UMC) that can only do 4mbps. No idea when if ever it will support 10mbps. However I am happy with my 4mbps and with a nice cost reduction it is even sweeter.

Since I'm not really keen on waiting I ended up upgrading my line to 2mbps today in anticipation of the upgrade next week, besides that 4mbps bundle through telkominternet is just too good value to pass up imo. My exchange cant support more than 4mbps anyway. Happy so far with the (slight) speed increase
