Telkom Speed upgrades

I got bumped to 4Meg at about 22:50 but it doesnt really help if the account is 2Meg so whats the point?

Having your line sync at 4Mbps on a 2Mbps account eliminates all the overhead, when your line was 2Mbps you would get around 216kBps right, now you will get closer to 256kBps.

Got upgraded to 10MB, max my line can handle is is 6.144mb due to distance from exchange. ALthoug hmy line is set at 4mb at MWEB, my speed test on SAIX returned 5.2Mbps down, and 0.55Mbps up after port reset.

Who is your ISP ?
You need to contact them to inform them of your speed upgrade because you are currently on a 2mb data product. So hence you only getting the max of 2mb even though router states 4mb

Just to confirm: I have been upgraded from 2Mb to 4Mb line, and I am syncing at 4MB on the router. My ISP is Afrihost and I still have a 2Mb account with them. I did a speedtest just after the upgrade and I was getting 340kbps download, but now I am getting the normal (2Mb) average of around 200kbps.

Does this mean that until Afrihost does something on their side I will still effectively be on 2MB?

Correct

So I gave Telkom a call last night and they did a profile reset. Now I'm on a 4 meg line (2 meg OW gold account).
speedtest shows 3.57 up, woohoo!

What is the max distance you can be from the exchange for 8Mb line and greater? I have one line syncing at 6Mb and the other at 8Mb. The 8Mb i dropped it yesterday from 10 as the line has been unstable. Roughly 2.12Km away from Exchange.

To be stable on 8Mbps you need no more than a 42dB downstream attenuation on the router/line, if it goes over 42dB then the line will become unstable.

42dB will mean you are +-3km from the exchange.
