ja something like "installation is R400, but 10% discount for every 30 days it takes longer than 2 weeks" everybody would get free installations.

30 Days? Fark that, every day, and go into the negatives - more than 10 days late, they start paying US!

The problem is, they're doing this according to their own schedule, in a way that maximises their profit. They don't care that we are now years behind the rest of the world (including large parts of Africa). All they care about is their bottom line.

If they gave a s**t, they'd do a hell of a lot more.

KoRn, the last time Telkom offered a price decrease it was very small and everyone still cheered until it was followed up shortly there after with a moerse increase in the cost of bandwidth and the hard cap.
Telkom doesnt exactly ooze consumer confidence so the skepticism (not really negativity) is well placed and well deserved.

why would they need to increase consumer confidence if you have no where else to go sneeky? like sure you are upset but at end of month you must still pay so who cares if you are jumping up and down or not?

Yes, but the ICASA docs made provision for 14 days, if memory serves. Also, if Telkom were truly Proudly SA, they would have kept more than a skeleton staff for ADSL installations. So, I say again, make them pay for their anti-service approach to business.

The government doesn't think so, which was why Telkom were given their monopoly with a bunch of charity clauses attached. We're going off topic here though...

Not really. Every price cut Telkom has ever made has only screwed us for more in a different area. In this light, debating their unethical, underhanded and unpatriotic actions is not off topic.

True. Telkom price changes are equal to squeezing a balloon. You may compress one end, but somewhere else it bulges... Lets hope this time it is different. And above all, lets hope it is a trend! No use them changing it before the hearings and then popping back to old tricks afterwards...

Me thinks someone is expecting to get roasted at the ADSL colloquium and is trying to look good.

No I tend to disagree with the sentiment that Telkom is doing this because of a fear of ICASA. What has ICASA actually done to date? Telkom is doing this for no other reason than financial gain.

Watch for the hidden offset of this against other services. Basically more customers encouraged to sign up re the new pricing policy will entail more revenue for SAIX re their previously implemented cap policy (local + int).

These pricing changes have nothing to do with ICASA, Doc or SNOT; Telkom have one goal in mind and that is to increase revenue; if they can achieve this and improve customer sentiment then it's a bonus in light of the SNOT.

Only expect true reduction by Telkom once the SNOT is able to deliver an equiavalent set of services at a lower price or improved quality.

I personally hope the SNOT are not just full of hot air and can actually deliver on everyone's expectations.

Telkom have got to drop the line rental!! Go with SNO (or any isp) and still pay telkom line rental - or are we going to have to pay SNO line rental as well???

The last Telkodemonopolies ADSL price changes came into effect on 2005-11-01, and that was a significant price increase for most people that attempt to use ADSL as a broadband service...

Well, i'm not to sure about that but all I know is that I pay R200 less for my 512 ADSL than I used to in the old days. Maybe for you R200 a month is nothing but to me its a bucketload of money.

Let's see... Those happened at the end of August 2005. It's now EXACTLY 6 months later, with the next ones after this due again "when the company presents its annual tariff filing to the Independent Communications Authority of SA", which is in August, 6 months from now.

They're working on a 6 month schedule. If you can wait another 6 months, don't get ADSL now. In 6 months time it'll be cheaper, and there'll be more competition, regulation changes etc.

(ic, IMHO as far as Telkom are concerned, November 1st wasn't a price change, it was a loophole closer. Still sucked tho' ).

Well I ordered ADSL192 from Telkom 2 days ago, so it SHOULD be at least another 6 months before they install it anyways!!

Home DSL 196 should be free with normal line rental as a basic feature.
