Telkom uncapped ADSL explained in detail

Someone really should stop putting drugs into the water at Telkom.
These offerings just don't make any sense considering what every other ISP already has on offer.

Hmmmm.... does the Afrihost uncapped product allow you to DL during the day? This one does albeit at a throttled rate.

Shaped always (priority http(s), ftp, DNS - scavenger class for p2p, no mention of video/voice and vpn traffic)
throttled heavily during working hours and to a lesser extent during the evenings
more expensive than most competitors
local traffic at full account speed, so no throttling (but appears there may still be some shaping??) - but not line speed
local is at account speed, not line speed (so for the Rage special you would need another account to get 4Mbps)

I cannot see the benefit of these packages over MWEB for example, MWEB has some shaping, but my experience has been very good and they are cheaper - once you start looking at the throttling there is a marked difference. Imagine, now you are forced to use the Telkom helpdesk for problems - nightmare!

At least we now know Brian Armstrong was BSing us all along around uncapped, I am really interested to see how these packages evolve, especially in light of the comments around converged services with 8ta... Imagine they do something like MWEB and FNB do with some free wifi minutes and even mobile data with your ADSL account. Telkom 10Mbps uncapped ADSL plus 10G 8ta for under R1000 p/m */wakes up

Ah soz didn't read your post carefully enough. 100gigs is a standard 384k line doing line speed straight through the whole month.

Also, the tables are wrong...the second 6AM should be PM.

EDIT: More accurate calc:

384k TI uncapped:
Average speed: 335 - 64 overheads = 271 kbps or 26KB/s
Max possible download: 86 gigabyte per month

1024k TI uncapped
Average speed: 705 - 64 overheads = 641 kbps or 80KB/s
Max possible download: 205 gigabyte per month

This is assumes the product performs at the specified levels 24/7, which is unlikely.

I doubt any of them throttle without telling you. More likely to be shaping + natural load on the network slowing things down.

Apparently these accounts are no more shaped than their normal capped accounts. They are only throttled.

It was a statement made in the posted video [re shaping protocols] - he mentions web, ftp and DNS as priority and then mentions lowe priority for p2p. No mention of voice/video protocols and codecs, so not sure how things like SIP (and associated codecs), Skype and so forth would be treated.

I agree on the other ISP shaping/throttling - you mentioned Afrihost in a post regarding this, I can verify their shaping/throttling is severe. I could very rarely achieve full line speed with them and had various protocols rendered useless (VPN especially, SSH badly affected).

Except Telkom wont shape more than normal shaped telkom accounts....

That sucks for the capped guys paying through their arse and getting shaped according to the same profile as the uncapped guys!

Yes simply put my steam, browsing and youtube runs full speed all the time on mweb, only my downloads slow down and frankly I dont sit and watch downloads. I will notice the difference between 1 meg and less than half that in browsing though.

Frankly the telkom product may perform better for downloading torrents but for everything else it will be worse and will be more expensive to boot.

Would love to meet the idiot who came up with the idea of throttling a 384k line. Browsing on 384k isn't slow enough?

White reiterated this point, but added that during Telkom’s data usage trial where they temporarily increased the caps on all of their accounts they found that customers used more data.

Or they have been blowing smoke for the last year, you do not suddenly roll out uncapped after a two month trial of a few extra GBs p/m...

Shaping would work better to ensure better client experience and minimise congestion during peak hours since they are doing it anyway, seems they may not yet have got the hang of the network tools mentioned in the interview....

What the throttling does do is take the possible total throughput per day from 4GB to 3.3GB or 120GB pm to 99GB pm. Not looking at protocol overhead etc, just rough figures and they make sure it is not going to affect their bus customers. But again only torrents would be the issue and shaping already takes care of that so don't get it.

Well that 4MB pricing is for business users or so i have heard ;-), watching the interview, White says they will introduce a package that is cheaper just not ready for fruition yet .

Telkom has alwasy offered the best quality isp connection albeit being more expensive. So I have little doubt that these packages wont work well.

I'll hang 10 until WACS arrives!
