I'll be happy with that... I've cancelled my Afrihost account (out of frustration of the daytime shaping) and will test this 1Mb account from 1 November onwards.
 
This is really not that bad a product. It's uncapped but instead of hiding behind the general 'shaping' thing they're going to use more specific throttling. I'm looking forward to seeing what their ~4mb offer will be!

Erm, they shape as well as throttle so no luck there.

Cap increase maybe, cost come down nope. They have purposely crippled their uncapped product to ensure they can still sell gigs.

I think the proof is going to be in the eating. If Telkom maintains throttling in the upper band, and shaping is minimal (as it is now), then Mweb should be very very worried.
 
White reiterated this point, but added that during Telkom’s data usage trial where they temporarily increased the caps on all of their accounts they found that customers used more data.

I take it those days are over and the accounts have conveniently reverted to their pre-trial limits?

What Shayd said and why on earth would you take the Telkom shaped AND throttled account when you can get the MWEB one for same price and get minimal shaping and no throttling???
 
People hate on Telkom non-stop right? But surely some time in the future their uncapped packages will just be unbeatable and everyone will flock to them? Are the other ISP's kinda screwed if this happens.can someone inform me kindly.thnks

That certainly was not my experience with MWEB. Sure their more expensive unshaped uncapped accounts are brilliant, but the shaped accounts are very much shaped, depending on your use of course.

I like the sound of Telkoms offer (now I have to go drown myself for admitting that in public), if their was no "dynamic" shaping involved it could well have been a viable alternative for news readers, etc. There might be hope yet, in the interim I'll stick with my RedAfrica account.
 
@MickeyD it was stated it is shaped like the normal capped accounts, I didn't make any comment on HOW it is shaped, so might be pretty good, but it don't understand the point of doing both shaping and throttling.

Perhaps I am not a heavy enough user (don't do torrents often basically), so use about 30GB on a 384 line. But if I look at the service performance it is great:
VPN - excellent
SSH -excellent
video streaming from supersport - excellent (@300kbps, can't do the 500kbps obvs)
skype - very good for speed available
FNB VOIP - good

All of which performed fairly poorly or not at all (VPN) on the Afrihost uncapped. I have not used the Telkom or many of the other uncapped, but have used a few of the IS resold ones and didn't like them for the same reasons (heavy shaping).

So on the MWEB, not sure if it is just the 384 vs larger accounts or the fact that I don't burn 80+ GB pm, but my experience has been really good, i get line speed on all the protocols I need to run. My
