Telkom uncapped ADSL pricing unveiled

Don't worry. It is not sustainable. Soon webafrica will be the last remaining ISP ;)
There will be no WebAfrica for us to go to when all these other ISP's close if they dont change their plans soon.

The details of the new TelkomInternet do Uncapped accounts are as follows:

Do Uncapped 384kbps account only – R219; daytime restriction (06h00 to 22h00) to 354kbps
Do Uncapped 1Mbps account only – R369; daytime restriction (06h00 to 22h00) to 767kbps
Do Uncapped 4/10Mbps account only – R2097

Do Uncapped 384kbps account & ADSL access – R371; daytime restriction (06h00 to 22h00) to 354kbps
Do Uncapped 1Mbps account & ADSL access – R658; daytime restriction (06h00 to 22h00) to 767kbps
Do Uncapped 4/10Mbps account & ADSL access – R2510

The 4/10MB pricing is way to over priced in my opinion. These prices are not going to make Mweb even budge, they have all the subscribers already and no one is going to move over to a more expensive package because its Telkom.

The rAge Special is good,to bad its only a special and not the real deal!

Redafrica accounts is still the best value for money accounts in this country.
nobody else can match Webafrica's special

Ja. For all of the ten guys they allowed on it :D:p

Personally nothing is moving me away from Afrihost just yet...

From the article all I know is the speed will be throttled to "daytime" (22:00 daytime O.o") restrictions... I assume other protocols would remain unchanged (streaming/p2p)...

If this is true, then sounds like a good deal to me compared to other ISP's slow p2p/streaming during the day...
If this is false, then doesn't sound appealing at all, especially for signing contracts...

Now i want to wait and see what other ISPs going to offer... lets just hope the prices will keep decreasing

Those high end accounts are too expensive by miles..

Sorry Telkom, I'm staying where I am.

Just re-read the news article:

The do Gamers bundle, available only at rAge this weekend, costs R782 per month and includes line rental for Telkom’s fast ADSL offering (“up to 1Mbps”), a copy of Battlefield 3 (when it launches), and a 2TB external hard drive.
You are required to sign a 12 month contract for the Do Gamers bundle.

It didn't say anything about signing a contract for the uncapped ADSL... it only says you need to sign 12 months (R782 p/m x 12) for the Do Gamers bundle...

unless stated elsewhere?

On the 1meg lines:

6 am to 6 pm: Up to 472kbps
6 pm to 10 pm: Up to 767kbps
10 pm to 6 am: Up to 1Mbps
No restriction on local traffic

I didn't read the article so I don't know if they mention:
There will be no daytime limits for Do Uncapped 4 Mpbs, which is designed for daytime and evening use.

:( The 4Mbps/10Mbps accounts are way...way...way...way too expensive. We are moving in the right direction for sure but these plans are STILL huge rip-offs.

I wouldnt rejoice yet, before moving to mweb I was on do 3 and the nntp services were completely blocked between 7am and 6 pm.

The real prices, especially for 4Mb and higher:

I think the best part of this announcement is that Mweb might be forced to drop their ridiculous pricing on their 10mbps uncapped accounts.

This is exactly what I am waiting for. I was hoping Telkom would man up and actually offer a real competitive plan for 10Mbps so that Mweb and Afrihost would have no choice but drop their prices asap but here we are debating 384Kbps plans, damn Telkom.

so effectively I`m paying R369 for a 767kbps product as apposed to R299 for 1Mbps with my current ISP...again , no thanks.

That depends on the throttling policy your current ISP applies to a "1Mbps" account ...

Do you have access to their shaper to see what their policy applies?

Obviously not. But it is pretty obvious when you download something whether you are getting full speed or not ;) It doesn't take a genius.

maybe it's just me but the contract and price is still a fail for me....especially the top end offering...

why cant the try and match the other ISP's and can the contract???

You are required to sign a 12 month contract for the Do Gamers bundle.

That is the only place in the article the work 'contract' appears. You seem to have assumed that *all* the bundles require contracts, but I don't think this is the case.

Doesn't apply to the account AFAIK. If you try running a 1Mbps account on a 4Mbps line then you will get the full 1Mbps speed. But if you try running it on a 1Mbps line then your speed will be reduced.

You won't be able to run lower speed accounts on higher speed lines. Otherwise, why would anyone pay for more than a 384 account?

See the post before yours to see why there is such a big price difference between 1Mbps and 4-10Mbps.
