I currently have wireless internet but new wisp is not so great (old one shut down)
Anyhow looking at options around 1k a month, thought of ADSL but Telkom say max speed they can give is 4mbs.

Then they have LTE deals get a modem blah blah but capped at 200gb for R1049 - I use around 300gb.

But then they have an option get some crappy phone with unlimited data for R1099 with free calls.

So whats the catch here, surely just get this deal and turn phone into wifi hotspot with unlimited data?

Yes & no. You'll have to trick the phone into using the unlimited data as hotspot data. There's vids on how to do it, but you'll have to root the phone.

My bff in Malaysia also has an unlimited data contract, but she has limited hotspot data of a few gigs. If it's the same sort of system Telkom has then it should work...

Please post link for that video

Careful for "unlimited" data, especially on mobile services. The FUP normally has ridiculously low data limits, hidden somewhere in the fine print.

It is disgusting that telecoms operators are allowed to mislead consumers in this way.
