Telkom versus Vodacom, MTN

Come on VC and MTN!!!

Adjust your out of bundle rates!!!! :-)))

You've been beaten by Telkom!

I agree on the OOB rates.. VC and MTN need to pull up their socks...

But overall, I am still trying to see how this Service will work for Telkom, they are more than likely tacking the 3g equipment onto their existing Wimax base stations...and WiMAX is cheaper than DO-on-the-move (or whatever other lame-ass name they're calling it)

Im sorry but wtf is with the "no tower to tower handoff"? Yet again it seems Telkom take a technology that works well and has been proven and completely toffee's it up in the implementation stage.

On a different note, I see it is also only available in jhb / pta. So for me its no biggie as I cant use it anyway.

The OOB rates are starting to look interesting. Now the real question is:

Will the other ISP's join the party?

/Edit Chuck me farlie. The posts are really fast these days! :D

Where's the comparison with Neotel? It's hardly a comparison if you only compare the expensive operators with each other. There's very little technical difference between HSDPA and EV-DO, so it's not as if it's an unfair comparison.

Their relationship with vodacom doesn't allow them to do handover. Once they sell their vodacom stake it won't be an issue anymore.

This service is similar to Vodacom and MTN’s HSDPA offerings, but does not allow tower handover - and therefore full mobility - as is the case with data offerings from the mobile providers.

What the hell does this mean?

It is coming on Monday. The reason why we only selected the cellular providers is the similarity in packages...Neotel comes in with much higher in-bundle sizes.

Hi Sunsoffun

At this stage the shareholding of Telkom in Vodacom prohibits them from offering fully mobile services. This means that you can not move from one tower to the next without dropping a call/connection. This restriction should not influence you much on the data side, and will also fall away if the Vodafone deal goes through…

If you're driving your car with your laptop on the passenger seat you will get disconnected when going out of range of the tower you were connected to. You won't get automatically connected to the next tower.

If you set your connection to automatically reconnect when the connection is dropped you won't notice it though.

Thanks. Data wise.... its "mobile" and if you make a phone call... dont move! :D

Yeah, to my knowledge Telkom's vendor had to implement some custom trickery to disable this functionality as its standard on all UMTS equip/systems.

It is still mobile - you can walk around and even drive around - as long as you stay in the same sector and dont move from tower to tower (I am not entirely certain about sector handover). I dont think too many people - except Vodacom3G of course - surf while driving :D

Tower to tower handoff is when you move between towers ... ie. you're driving along with your cellphone and the next tower has better reception than the current tower as you're further/closer. With data it's unlikely you'd want to drive with your laptop and data connection so it's not required.

If you're listening to internet radio on your cell phone while driving then handover is important.

It's not the relationship that prohibits this, it is the terms of their license. Telkom has a fixed line license while only mobile operators are allowed to provide full mobility.

Kekekekeke .. so .. if I happened to have a 2 km long telephone extension cable in my boot unravelling as I drive, and I drove around while talking to somebody on my landline-phone ... wham ... teklom are in breach of their license.

LMAO! Freking ludicrous!

Now i am really disappointed in my current provider.I see the 3gig bundle in VC has a R200 rand jump for another gig from the 2 gig bundles. This i never understood for months why this is.Seems its better for a 3 gig with telkom:(
