Im sorry but wtf is with the "no tower to tower handoff"? Yet again it seems Telkom take a technology that works well and has been proven and completely toffee's it up in the implementation stage.
On a different note, I see it is also only available in jhb / pta. So for me its no biggie as I cant use it anyway.
This service is similar to Vodacom and MTN’s HSDPA offerings, but does not allow tower handover - and therefore full mobility - as is the case with data offerings from the mobile providers.
It is coming on Monday. The reason why we only selected the cellular providers is the similarity in packages...Neotel comes in with much higher in-bundle sizes.Where's the comparison with Neotel? It's hardly a comparison if you only compare the expensive operators with each other. There's very little technical difference between HSDPA and EV-DO, so it's not as if it's an unfair comparison.
What the hell does this mean?
Hi Sunsoffun
At this stage the shareholding of Telkom in Vodacom prohibits them from offering fully mobile services. This means that you can not move from one tower to the next without dropping a call/connection. This restriction should not influence you much on the data side, and will also fall away if the Vodafone deal goes through…
Yeah, to my knowledge Telkom's vendor had to implement some custom trickery to disable this functionality as its standard on all UMTS equip/systems.This means that you can not move from one tower to the next without dropping a call/connection.
It is still mobile - you can walk around and even drive around - as long as you stay in the same sector and dont move from tower to tower (I am not entirely certain about sector handover). I dont think too many people - except Vodacom3G of course - surf while drivingThanks. Data wise.... its "mobile" and if you make a phone call... dont move!![]()

Tower to tower handoff is when you move between towers ... ie. you're driving along with your cellphone and the next tower has better reception than the current tower as you're further/closer. With data it's unlikely you'd want to drive with your laptop and data connection so it's not required.
Their relationship with vodacom doesn't allow them to do handover. Once they sell their vodacom stake it won't be an issue anymore.
