Telkom won't be fourth mobile operator

Yes, it makes more sense for Telkom to compete with the likes of Neotel & Vodacom Business who are all using wireless services to compete with Telkom's own fixed line solutions.

Actually a strange situation:

1 - Telkom builds fixed line network.

2- Other operators build wireless data networks to compete with Telkom.

3 - Telkom build wireless network to compete with other operators.

This is not a good idea as having too many networking infrastructures will be spreading the company too thin... best to build and focus on one type of infrastructure rather than trying to offer a lot of diverse services and losing money if one is not profitable.

So they only want to provide services to the rich so they can make more money.

Now why do so many people hate telscum?

i'll be happy if telkom will just install my line i've been waiting for, it's been nearly four months

Not trying to defend Telkom at all but it's standard business principles to first go for the market segments where you can see the quickest ROI.

Thus you will see all network providers, IS, Vox, VB, Neotel, all first addressing the corporate segment. And then, as you start recovering your investment, you can move into the lower revenue streams.

Well i think telkom is using its head for once with the (target corporate customers, high-end residential customers and high cable theft / high maintenance areas) something Neotel did.

"...but it was still seeking a roaming agreement with an
existing operator. ..."

WCDMA is a type of UMTS(googled it) thou is this going be like the "3" network in the UK (3g only network) if so that means im going be able to use telkom on my 3G mobile? Telkom's using UMTS 3g?
Telkom sim?

More information is needed

wasn't virgin the 4th? unless they are counting on the fact that they use cell c's infrastructure.

On one hand I think telkom is being smart to stay out this game, but with the company being attacked from all sides it might have been a good profit bringer if they got things right in the cellular market. Not like I really care about their profit margin anyway.

That is because of history. Telkom still have cables wrapped in waxed paper out there.

And aren't MTN, Vodacom and Neotel also building fibre so that they can offer fibre connections to corporates? So the wired are going wireless and vice versa?

Typical of the idiots! They have a lot of cash...from raping the South African. But their lack of business sense and/or common sense is such that they cannot commit themselves to any strategy for any length of time. To put it bluntly, they don't know what they are doing! If this is not being 'all over the place' then nothing is. First it was connecting 2/3 of the underserviced by whenever and they failed. Then it was Wimax - They failed. Then it was Telkom Media whose business strategy was like a badly written idea for a sitcom- They miraculously realised their folly and abandoned it. Then it was the rushed Telkom 3G. It seems like they said to themselves: "If the cellphone companies can make money out of this, so can we," without thinking the strategy through. Now they are not even sure about that too- "We are not planning to be the 4th Network." What utter imbeciles! Is common sense so rare?

Sigh!
