i just got adsl 384 - 2 gig package 2 days ago :)

IM SCARED of being capped.I downloaded 300 mbytes in one day.I know i wont ever reach around 6 gigs.I dont like torrents to be honest.

Do you guys think i should be scared to download as much as possible? What if they do just cut me off at 2 gigs.It should happen!!!

I have 1.7 gigs lef for august.Thats a measly 140 mbytes per day :(

Any advice .Im a scared newbie

There is only 1 way to know for sure, go past 2gb. There is a 99% u WONT be hard capped. 300mb a day isnt too much, its when u start downloading like 4-7gb a day that you need to be concerned...

I would be surprised if you got capped at anything below 4 gig - however nothing in life is certain

Also got my 2+ GB account this week, as the other guys said, the only way you'll now is to hit it hard! (well, not TOO hard :) ). I've got my WA prepaid on standby in case I land in trouble, suggest you do the same!

It will go over 3GB, but that tracker is always outdated. Use http://www.saix.co.za so check the usage.. note: there is currently a problem on that site, you cant check TelkomInternet accounts, unless you are on antoher ISP... Gives authorisation requests errors.

It will show your total upload and download stats. If u download 5gb it will show 5gb.

Thanks for the blazing fast replies!

I cant afford another account.Il just have to ride my luck.
I know i wont abuse it though.Il probably get average 5 gbytes a month.

I just dont wanna see what happens when Telkom properly monitor usage and cut you off one klap.Imagine its like the 10th of the month and you get capped. That sucks balls :(

And do other ISP's allow you to exceed the limit?

No they do now, but matt, I would recommend getting a perpaid R75 1GB account. So if you do get capped you atleast have some basic access.

The 1GB will carry over as long as you need it. The R75 is not a repeated charge, only when you go onto their site and click "topup"

Ok thanks :)

But can anyone actually explain why the 'allow' us to almost be uncapped?

Surely its not difficult for software to detect when you are hitting the cap?

They do it to attract customers and they dont lose money because SAIX and TelkomInternet is basically the same company.

Telkom works it that the TelkomInternet devision would basically always work at a loss (that is my opinion).

Telkom themselves still profit because they pay virtually nothing for the extra bandwidth since the network and SAT3 cable is basically theirs, in the local infrastructure sense it is totally theirs.

Other ISPs cant do this because they need to buy bandwidth from Telkom in per gig format.

To repeat quickly, TelkomInternet also has to pay per gig, but it buys it from itself. If Telkom wants to cap you at 3GB they will do it.

Just to make things sound legal they say they are sharing the bandwidth between all their clients. I.E those that only use 1GB out of 3GB, the othe 2GB goes into a shared pool for users that go over 3GB

Telkom has stated 96% of their subscribers use only 1.4gb of the 3gb.

They therefore redistribute the anticipated unused bandwidth. Because they're the largest ISP they have a vast pool of bandwidth to allocate to the minority (4%) of people who exceed their cap.

EDIT - and lets face it - if they need to 'purchase' more bandwidth they're buying it from themselves.

You guys are mistating the issue a bit.

There is no such thing as bandwidth.... let me explain.

You pay Telkom for a 384/512/1024Kbit pipe onto thier network, that is the badnwidth section. They have contention ratios of say 60:1 (no one knows exact values) i.e. they sell that same 384/512/1024Kbit 60 times.

It is thierfore irrelevant how much traffic you put over that link, as you're paying for the segment.

The only reason there are caps in place is because of Network Congestion, i.e. Telkom doesn't have enough bandwidth on thier network (remember by bandwidth I mean 155MBit lines) to sell 160 000 ADSL users 1MBit each, even at 60:1. So they need to limit the users usage of the lines in order to keep the network uncongested.

Capping is practiced on alot of networks internationally as well, because providers have to over sell to make profits.

My point being, Telkom doesn't buy GB's because there are no such thing as GB's it's simply a congestion game.

Oh, and Telkom / SAIX / Telkominternet are not virtually the same company, they ARE the same company... Telkom SA Ltd.
