TelkomZA

Not too technically clued up. Please explain. I had a 1MB account from telkom previously (year or so ago) and easily got in excess of 120 kilobytes per second speeds back then.

Then you were not on a 1Mbit line. You maybe had a faster line with a 1Mbit data account but it is impossible to get 128KB/sec or more on a 1Mbit line due to the way that the TCP/IP protocol operates. You can read here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protocol_overhead

I have sent a follow up PM - It's 14 days since the original Install/Transfer date given by Telkom, 2 cable faults reported and no Telkom service. Please Escalate!
I have sent another follow up PM. We are getting nowhere on our line move originally scheduled for 16th August.
Two site visits by installation technician, two cable faults logged, and silence.
Telkom Installation department do not answer their phones. I have given up now after an hour on hold.

Please escalate the issue - details sent in a PM to the relevant area supervisor, or whoever can get the different departments to sort it out ASAP. We are desperate and have no Telkom lines as we moved on the agreed installation date.

Hi TelkomZA

The problem I'm having is that my download speeds fluctuate quite a lot, this is fine for file downloads/torrents etc but makes streaming a bit of a pain. It's a LOT better with Afrihost now compared to Mweb as I can stream YouTube at 360p but still can't stream properly from supersport.co.za. I was on the phone earlier trying to sort it out but call cut off and don't want to call back and get any info crossed. It seems my Attenuation and SNR isn't that great:-

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2048 Kbps 512 Kbps
Line Attenuation 49.3 dB 27.0 dB
Noise Margin 12.9 dB 12.0 dB

Could you please log the appropriate fault for this because I don't know what it is and quite difficult to explain over the phone. Will gladly supply any other info via PM if required.

Regards
Scotty

What is the story on torrents throttling? I am currently getting 6.1 kB/s on my 4MB line uncapped. I used virtually nothing this month and the usage bar does not even register. Yet, when I switch to my free FNB account, I get 350kB/s on the same torrent.

So I am losing 10 kilobytes per second. Suppose its taboo to complain about that? Wonder if Telkom will mind me deducting 10% from what I owe them?

Telkom is delivering a 1Mb/s line to you. The PHYSICAL line speed is 1Mb/s and it can do that. You can't go on blaming them for protocol overheads. It does not matter whether you use dial-up, isdn, adsl, vdsl, atm, sdh, ethernet copper or ethernet fiber etc as you will experience protocol overheads on any medium, it's not an issue with the physical line but the protocols used to send & receive your data. If you encrypt your traffic and get even slower speeds are you gonna blame them them for that as well as it's exactly the same principle.

You're nitpicking here and anyone will tell you to get stuffed if you expect to see 100Mb/s throughput on a 100Mb/s Ethernet LAN, it simply does NOT work like that.

So I have not seen a reply from TelkomZA in the last three pages. Is he still assisting customers?
I just have a quick question...

This is what I've been living with the past 2 weeks.
