or there seem to be more than one terminator protecting and well as hunting Sara Connor.
especially this time , when the one splits into 2 separate machines.

From what i guess it's no longer Skynet but another AI from the Future - John may no longer be the savior of humanity , hence this new girl is the target as she must be now.
Sarah is still involved as she As per trailer has been spending her life hunting any Terminators that may have come from the future.
and the T800 seems to be a terminator (possibly the same one from T2) that has somehow survived and decided to live a peaceful life

Skynet is inevitable, this is almost a verbatim line spoken by Arnie's T-850 in Rise of the Machines.

Its just that the date of Judgement Day and the way Skynet comes in to existence is altered with the events of every movie.

They just keep delaying the inevitable in each movie.

- In T1 they just survive
- In T2 they manage to stop the lead scientist from developing the AI so Judgement Day was delayed
- T3 follows T2 but splits off into a separate timeline as they realize it was just delayed and Judgement Day actually happens
- T4 follows from T3 and we see things many years after Judgement Day
- T5 follows from T2 and ignores the events of T3/T4 as the lead scientist's son now creates the AI called Genesis in the future which is the Skynet equivalent.

So the timelines are either T1>T2>T3>T4 or T1>T2>T5. Other combos don't make sense,
 
Sarah Connor always comes back and so does the terminators. Why don't they just go way back in time when the humans were still fighting with swords and shields and setup a robotic plant and wipe everyone out? Cause they seem to time travel so often.

But wait, that will be there in Terminator 25, followed by Rocky 42.

I am just tired of the story. Terminator Salvation was better. As the rest, the terminator keeps coming back to kill sarah connor followed by another terminator to rescue her. T1, T2, Sarah Connor Chronicles, etc.

Cant they come up with a better new story, not the same ....oh we will send a T5 back to fight a T2 or so. blah blah the T2 will win but die, and Sarah is saved again.

Skynet needs a human to create it. If you wipe all humans out how would the terminator(s) that travel back ever come in to existence?

Human creates AI -> AI becomes self-aware -> AI turns on humans.

Its an inevitable and constant loop. Each trip back changes things but there is one constant; Skynet will rise and it will keep trying to kill people that lead to its future defeat.

The war between humans and Skynet is fought in the past, the present and the future.

Then there is also the fact that every trip creates an alternate timeline, a deviation.

Genisys doesn't follow any of them, but is probably closer to T1. It even recreates the scene where the Terminator goes back in the first film, but is instead killed by Sarah, therefore diverging the timelines already, as Sarah is now not the helpless waitress she was in the first one.

There is also the divergence of the TV series which follows 2.
So it would be you're first option but also could be
T1->T2-> Sarah Connor Chronicles or T1->T5. Now it's going to be T1->T2->T6.

I don't really care for the franchise but if there's a rerun of T2 on tv I will watch it, it's one of my favourite sci-fy movies. hollyweird will fsck things up though...

I finally watched Dark Fate yesterday. It follows directly from T1 and T2 and ignores T3, T4, T5.

Seems like they used T2 as a starting point for every movie that came after it and keep trying to make the perfect T3. Now 4 attempts to make T3.

It's a good action flick and something a Terminator fan should watch. They managed to fit it in the timeline after T1 and T2 without any loopholes that I can think of. Think of it as the official T3.

The main story arc is nothing new though. Very few surprises at all. It's just recycled, "protect xxx person because they are important in the future".
 
Just some mindless action. Would appeal to certain groups of people, but to real T fans this is just a simple rebash of the old to cater for the new generation. Basically just more of the same recent old stuff.

And now, we have the Terminator series, which thrice has tried to revive itself using different gimmicks (Christian Bale as John Connor in a future war sequel), hooks (Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor in a time-twisting retcon modeled after Star Trek) , and hail Marys’ (Cameron bringing Hamilton and Schwarzenegger back in an R-rated sequel modeled after Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and three times it has died a gruesome box office death.
