What is the health industries obsession with BMI?

At 1.79m tall and my goal weight of 95kg I tip the obese / pre-obese scale. This does not take into account muscle mass. At 85kg (the dream) i'm still pre-obese. 80 is BMI normal. At that point I look skinny with next to zero muscle definition.

The second I start working out I shed fat but build muscle fast enough that I sometimes gain weight but everything else goes a lot better.

Definitely an adventure. You definitely need to work for it to be ready by Feb. Even if just for the 50 miler.
Be careful of burning out if you hit it too hard.

I was really strong earlier this year and a 50km ride with 400m of elevation took a lot out of me. 82km and 700m is a push.
Yeah I wouldn't book for the 100 miler for sure. They have Ride the Karoo in September as well, which I thought would be the same set up for the 100 miler, which is 30km Friday, 60km Stuart and 60km Sunday. It's only after I went and read Feb's one properly did I see it was in ONE BLOODY DAY  There's a friend I want to join us, and he's out of the country by September, so Feb it is.

Currently we're doing 5km every 2nd day around the neighborhood with a decent mix of uphills. Can't really do any longer or minion will eat too late, but I'm sure soon we'll do every day.

Aim is 17km on the cycling track this Saturday.

Where are you guys based? If in Gauteng you are more than welcome to join us for a ride. +- 15km chilled ride at Big Red Barn. Tons of fun.

Problem is that everything in my closet had to go, gone from a size 36/38 to 28/30.
Everything is too friggin' big

It's a pretty good problem to have :D

For my height 65 is correct, apparently, I don't think I've been that since a teen. My focus is more on getting fit this time round than focusing on the scales, so hopefully it'll work out better for me. I've actively avoided my scale these past 2 weeks, I'm more interested in clothing fit. I look forward to having your problem :giggle:

Yep we're in Gauteng, Pretoria to be precise. Thanks, will take you up on that when we feel ready for offroad, right now want to feel comfortable on distance first without dying. We're absolutely couch potato level at the moment

Hit up Hazeldean Valley trails. The blue route is super chilled and only 18kms. Fairly flat.

Bmi is for gen pop, not really relevant for lifters.
Try ffmi

BMI definitely has its issues, but if I put my stats from when I was at my heaviest (before starting workout \ weight loss) into FFMI, at 196cm, 132kg and 32% body fat... it also says that result is "SUPERIOR" which I definitely wasn't... just fat. So I don't think that calc is quite right either.

That's because at 132kgs, you were likely not 32% body fat.
Bf% inaccuracies are very common.

Bit late to this party - I just signed up.

Been doing 18 (no eating) /6 (eating) for the last few months, which seems to be working for me, at least after a week or two of doing it.

Slowly but steadily losing weight. Was in the lowish 80's when I started, now at high 74's.
Goal is 70kg, which I think I can make it to by the time I get back to SA again in Jan.

Clothes are noticeably bigger now than when I started; if I keep this up, going to need to buy new stuff haha.

One key thing for me was to buy a weight machine, and weigh myself at least once a day.
This encourages me to keep an eye on the trends, so I can eat less if gaining a bit, and i've been cheating, or eat normally (within the 16/8 parameters).

Sometimes I cheat, so its nice to see how that affects things.

We were aiming for more km's, but a seat incident with the other half put pay to that  I have now strapped our little tool bag to my bicycle so we have the allen keys at the ready next time. Us n00bs are learning :giggle:

Can any of you recommend weight scales? I usually buy from dischem/clicks/makro and none of them lasted beyond 3 years. All 3 I had look pristine on outside so it is not like I use them much. I don't know why I didn't throw them out yet.

Current one (kind of working) is stuck on 1.6kg so I subtract it from reading. There is no adjustment mechanism as far as I see. It goes to 0.0 kg some days.

I am thinking of going back to good old mechanical ones. Even if they had a bit of "play", I don't think they ever fail.

p.s. I did change battery in case some masekind comments :)

Tsek bru

I would recommend something like this (I have this, works just great):

Or this:

I won't claim it is accurate but I will confirm it is consistent and that is all that really matters. Though the straight up weight measurement is accurate. Body fat etc etc... well who cares.
