The Angry at "Clickbait" Thread

I completely understand the need for this thread. Most of you guys aren't happy with anything this forum does. If you're unhappy, GTFO. I'm sometimes not happy with certain threads, I don't go around posting my stupid opinion on every single post I don't like. It's really not difficult clicking that x on the top of the tab :)

Yep. It's just a mob hobby horse lately. If you think it's clickbait, why TF are you reading it?

The irony is, you will most probably find the clickbait gang reading every article in the hopes of finding something to moan about - thus ensuring higher views regardless :D

I'll be the first to thank rpm, Kevin's articles are now much less click bait like. If only the same can be said for Businesstech :p

It's a step in the right direction and thank you to Kevin for putting in the extra effort.

I think RPM should challenge some of the moaners to write a better article on the same subject matter, hell he might even consider it a interview process :p

As a matter of interest, when are publications required to reference the source like "Source: AFP" or is it just something some of them do out of their own?

There are different rules depending on which type of publication you are - academic, non-commercial blog, or news website.

Best practice is to link to the source and attribute it in the article. Not to copy it verbatim, rewrite it and only include relevant quotes.

Some sources, like a newswire service, have stated rules regarding republishing and what you are required to do. (Example, News24 wire).

Serious question here. Call me triggered but who writes these Businesstech headlines? Personally, I think that it gives the impression that the site in amateurish / 'spamish'. (I know I am repeating myself)

The BusinessTech site is run by a separate editorial team. The site has its own editor, subeditor, journalists, etc, and is editorially independent from MyBroadband. It is our sister site.

We should have a thread like this for people who want to chat in the funny pictures thread!

Surely those terms cannot be used in when talking about Business Tech ? It's like the words "hospital food" and "elevator music"...they just do not make any sense when used next to each other.

So, a quick suggestion:

It's been mentioned before that mybb needs more personality (opinion pieces, humor etc.).

Imo this article: https://mybroadband.co.za/news/smartphones/195188-the-nokia-3310-is-not-indestructible-heres-proof.html is a perfect example of a complete lack of personality. The article is basically: Here's a youtube video. Why not go the extra step and include some personal anecdote, or find a 3310 and compliment the article with your own test under a taxi or something local. Put something in there that makes me smile or that I can relate with; a reason to forward someone the article rather than just sending them the youtube link.

Thanks for the feedback.

We can definitely look at adding more personality to certain pieces - but it will be the exception as opposed to the rule.

Your suggestion about testing the durability of a Nokia 3310, for example, is very close to what we would like to do more of. Providing readers with cool content based on hands-on experiences or our own tests is definitely something we must do more often.

If you, or any forum members, ever have ideas or suggestions, please drop me a PM or a mail at any time.

Thanks for communicating with us and being open to ideas - it's nice seeing you involved in threads like this.

One thing that i would enjoy would be the challenges you see on YouTube, LTT etc - Building a R5k Pc, those types of things. But from the South African perspective - local suppliers, local barriers, service delivery - it would provide a marketing opportunity for the suppliers as well as you guys, and would give insight into sites/best practices etc that the average SA consumer could find interesting.
We are all techies, but a lot of people will walk into Incredible Corruption and buy a pc for R10k that they could buy or build for maybe R7k.

We have noticed that certain members complain about headlines, describing them as clickbait.

What makes something clickbait: Online material (such as headlines) designed to make readers want to click on hyperlinks which lead to content of dubious value or interest.

Example: “You'll never believe what happened when…”

Our aim is to provide headlines which inform users of what they can expect in an article, to assist them to make a choice on whether to read it or not.

We can, however, appreciate that users obsessed with identifying what they view as clickbait are not happy with this definition and have a desire to complain about clickbait titles.

Unfortunately, this distracts from article discussions in the article thread - which is why we opened this thread.

Please use this thread for all your clickbait complaints. Clickbait complaints in article threads will be deleted and a friendly warning issued. If it continues, it will result in infractions.

Most of the time when the term "Clickbait" is used here, it's when there's information that could have been in the headline is purposefully left out, so we have to click.

There are many short articles here that would go unread as it's just a tiny bit of news information that a person could get from the headline instead.
