You mean stolen car. And brother Tongo was moonlighting from his day job as a driver. It's likely the only reason he lacks a criminal record is that he's never been caught. Think he had cops on his payroll.

Model citizen who just happens to know people who can kill other people - indeed. Such a convenient country - South Africa.

I wonder why people keep going on about the £800 he drew on the day of his wife's murder. First off ... it's kinda natural to draw money when you're on a holiday - you never know when cash will be necessary, and credit card facilities aren't universal. I carry cash on me all the time when I travel.

It also doesn't come to the alleged R15k he was supposed to be paying the killers - even if you add in the other £200.

I'm bothered by the fact that everyone seems to consider him guilty straight off the bat - maybe he is, but there are still too many unanswered questions and contradictions in this case. And so many of the people who insist he is guilty are the same people who were moaning that Zuma was being considered guilty before the outcome of his trial was decided - people in our government no less. Because it doesn't involve one of their own, it's okay to be biased. I'm thinking people are just getting emotional because SA's image has been ... *cough* tarnished *cough*

There's one thing I consider very clear. Whether or not Dewani plotted the whole thing or not - this entire incident still occurred in an SA township, on SA soil, and the act was perpetrated by South African citizens. So consider what happens if Dewani IS guilty - SA suddenly gains a rep as an assassination tourism destination - the perfect place to go to off someone for cheap. I can see the ads already.

No matter how this plays out, SA gets screwed.

I have to agree with you. I have not yet made up my mind yet as there are still too many unanswered questions to be able to make an informed decision.

Either way, SA's image has been tainted by what has happened.

I don't know how local ATM's treats foreign bank cards. Would the SA ATM not ask him to draw Rands and not Pounds? Without access to the receipt from the ATM or a copy of the bank statement, no one knows for certain how much he has withdrawn which is still not an indicator that he used the money to pay for a hit.

The biggest peice of evidence would be the content of the sms messages and I hope we get some sort of clarity on its authenticity from the networks soon.

£800 is approx. R8 700 (latest exhange rate). It is a lot to carry around. Always safer not to walk around with such a huge amount.

Of course, but a lot of people were reacting to the alleged exchange of SMSes, and Dewani making some kind of payment to Tongo 2 days after the murder. This is info we got via the media, so there may in actual fact be a logical explanation for it, but if not, you have to admit it seems dodgy.

When they refer to £800, was it not a British newspaper who did so? Proably just to make it easier for their readers to get an idea of the value.

The SA ATM will ask you for a Rand amount but then Pounds will be deducted from your UK account.

8k is close to the max you can get out of a SA ATM. The max is 10 K.

To draw any more he would have had to go into a branch.

Other evidence stockpiled by police against Dewani, Mngeni and Qwabe includes a comprehensive trace on cellphone calls between the men, the M&G said.

The electronic signature determines by triangulation where the accused were at the time of the calls and the time it took to travel between the cellphone towers.

Police also have damning SMSes sent back and forth from Tongo to Dewani on the night of the murder.
 
Looking at that report - it certainly seems that things are stacked in favour of the procecution.

Absolutely. There is always more than one possible explanation for any observed event - the fact is that arguments and explanations do not in themselves constitute evidence, and evidence is the only thing that can get a man convicted in court. But given the timing and actions - definitely dodgy.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not arguing that Dewani had nothing to do with this murder. I'm just tired of the double standards being applied. Almost every democratic constitution has the phrase "innocent until proven guilty" included in it in some way or another. When they pronounce the sentence "Guilty" I'll be as vocal as the rest in denouncing him as scum ... however, until then ...

At the same time - just see how there's no attention focused on the co-accused. Shame poor Tongo - father with 5 kids ... well ... he screwed himself over, didn't he? And now his 5 kids are in strife. Simply because he wanted easy money. Blame goes all around. If no-one had taken the alleged offer, Anni would still be alive, and Dewani (assuming he's guilty) would be sitting behind bars thinking - WTF just happened?

Not easy? Assuming all the accusations are true, all they needed to do was tip-off the police, the coppers could've staged the hi-jacking and arrested Dewani on the spot, most likely with the incriminating SMSs still on his phone. And the charge would've been attempted murder. And South Africa would've come out of it bright and shiny - with people praising our upstanding citizenry.

UPDATES :

London - The British businessman wanted in South Africa over the murder of his bride on their honeymoon was granted bail at the High Court in London on Friday.

South Africa wants to extradite 30-year-old Shrien Dewani on suspicion of paying to have his bride Anni killed in a carjacking during their honeymoon in Cape Town.

Lawyers for the South African authorities had argued that there were substantial grounds for suspecting Dewani would not surrender for an extradition hearing later this month were he allowed bail.

But High Court judge Duncan Ouseley disagreed and allowed his application.

Dewani strongly denies any involvement in the murder and told the earlier court hearing in London that he did not agree to the extradition

Suspected murderer awaiting extradition hearing is released on bail whilst man who's condom breaks also awaiting extradition hearing is declined bail & remanded in custody.

According to tonights E-News, he may be gay and his wife may have found out.

Also they're looking into the unsolved murder of that doctor in the Eastern Cape four years ago. The doctor was a family friend.
